FReeper Help on Live Weather Websites
27 AUG 2012 | Yours Truly

Posted on 08/27/2012 11:22:31 AM PDT by Old Sarge

Okay, Folks, here's the situation: In light of the developing weather situation this hurricane season, I need some expertise I can only find here.

Since I deployed to Iraq in 2005, I have been using WeatherUndergound.com for updated weather reports, radar shots, and alerts. They were VERY faithful in the past, and the technical data available on the site was easily translated into what I needed and when.

But this year, it's getting ridiculous. Wundergound is now spamming every screen with Obama's face and money-begging, and Shelly-O's mug is getting hideous exposure on every page.

So, let me ask the general populace: what sites do you use for meteorological data? Specifically, I'm looking for radar rollups, alerts/updates, and raw data and reports when available. And I'm tired of having to scroll through Leftist spam to get it.

Joe, could you ping the Florida Freepers on your list over here? Somebody has a good answer to what I got.

Paying Weatherunderground $10.00 a year stops the ads.

Might try adblock plus.

Well, for one, it appears that you are using the free operation of Weather Underground that is advertising supported. You could join by paying the annual membership and skip the adverts. Or you could (if you are into local weather like me) put up your own Personal Weather Station (PWS) and then publish your data to Weather Underground and get your membership for free. Of course the cost of the setup means my payback is sometime around death plus 20 years or so. Still watching Isaac’s antics here provides some degree of fun.

Weather.gov is still the best. The other weather sites rely on Gov't for their main information.

This is a good aggregate site with lots of links:

http://spaghettimodels.com/

It is a little busy graphically but has lots of good links to raw data.

Also if you do Twitter, @bigjoe Bastardi is a big weather twitter user.

Adblock Plus (Firefox add-on) is a must regardless of the site visited. Other FF add-ons include NoScript which is powerful indeed but can actually hinder useful content since it can block all JavaScript. Naturally you can enable what you wish to see on a per-site basis, by keyword, etc. etc.

Intellicast.com is a better site in my opinion, especially the zoomable radar map.

Wunderground.com was recently purchased by The Weather Channel which is very Leftist and big on AGW/Climate Change and Obama.

Even with all of the “Ground Clutter” in my opinion it is still the site with the best analyticals available and I treat that “Ground Clutter” just the same as I do the real stuff. From my experience the others have the same (Intellicast, AccuWeather) in regards to ads and somebody has to pay for all the neat toys for us who find the weather intersting.

Accuweather was good when Joe Bastardi was there but something happened (I think it had something to do with Glowbull Whining and he went out on his own at Weather Bell. The only problem is that it is a subscription site and unless you can afford the $160/yr price tag, wunderground is still by far the best.

Joe Bastardi, formerly of Accuweather, started his own site called WeatherBell.com. There are two levels of information, one for serious geeks and one for businesses who depend on accurate reports to make decisions. The geek side is $16 a month, with a two week free trial.

We used NOAA during past hurricane missions.

http://www.noaa.gov/

Here is the link we used to find barometric pressure, wind speeds, wave height, etc., on the various bouys in the gulf. Click on any box and find a bouy close to your location.

Weather Underground seems to use an AdChoices service. This puts customized ads on the page based on cookies on your computer from searches or websites visited.

IE, this isn’t Weather Underground’s fault but Obama buying a lot of AdChoices time.

You may be able to fix this by dumping all your cookies, doing some innocent searches (search coffee, watches, etc) and then use the site.

Right now, Weather Underground is showing ads for travel services and New Orleans for me which matches recent searches I completed.

Florida FReeper ping for Old Sarge, although he may have his answers already.

I also recommend use of Adblock Plus.

Florida Freeper

I have used Intellicast exclusively for years for daily weather stuff. On their zoom radar, I can even see my home if I wish.

On hurricanes, I use the National Hurricane Center from the National Weather service.
