Firstly, it is a FREAKING TURTLE--probably a small step about above a fish. Do they realize for every turtle that survives to become an adult, about 50 are devoured by predators?
Second of all, this woman the fire department. Typical of people too helpless do do anything themselves.
Third, the Fire Department actually showed up! How'd you like it if your house burned down because the fire department was helping a turtle out of a tree?
Fourth, they are talking about investigating this further. Gee, the city must be nearly crime free to have resources to put towards this.
I wonder how many babies were aborted in this country during that same time period.
I’m conflicted about this. While I agree that everyone involved over-reacted, I also understand that gratuitous animal cruelty is a symptom of deeper problems. I think the biggest malaise our society faces is a lack of empathy. From the perspective of a human who is aware of the risks and can make a choice in the matter I would say, “Hell yeah”, but we are dealing with critters who have no choice. I agree that a human life is worth more than that of an animal, but that is no excuse for inflicting distress for our personal amusement. With respect, FRiend, being pro-life extends to the fauna that the Almighty entrusted to our care.
Just today I rescued a box turtle that was in the middle of the opposing lane of the road.
Pulled off the road and ‘assisted’ him safely to the other side.
And for this one out of 50 that DID survive, there’s a recthole who thinks it’s funny or clever to torture it.
There are half as many fires and twice as many fire fighters as 30 years ago, on average. (Yes the public unions have been very successful).
It's not like they're overwhelmed with work.
It must be a slow news day.
Investigating it further on low resources makes some sense -- kids who torture animals (and I'm not saying that this was the case, it may be just curious kids who thought their turtle would enjoy it, or even who didn't know better) can lead to bad adults.
