penultimate (pi-nuhl-tuh-mit)

hear it pronounced

adjective 1. next to the last: the penultimate scene of the play. 2. of or pertaining to a penult. (okay, gang, what the hell is a “penult?”)
penult (pee-nuhlt, pi-nuhlt) noun, the next to the last syllable in a word

Etymology: Origin:

1530–40; < Latin paenultima ( syllaba ), contraction of paene ultima almost the last; see pen-, ultima

What penultimate doesn’t mean:

"final," "last," "best," or "best of the best."

It means, very simply, "next to the last."

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

This is completely off- topic, but I thought it worth sharing with the class.
In today’s Wall Street Journal, there is an article offering Tips & Tricks you can do with your iPhone & iPad.
One that I really liked: You can take a screenshot of whatever you’re looking at. Just press the Home Button (a physical button below the screen) and the On/Off Button (top right edge) simultaneously. You’ll hear the same sound as when you take a picture with the camera app. I have the original iPad model, no camera, but the screenshot works great! It will appear at the end of your photos, ready to email or read offline.
