People may still be excited about going on their summer holidays, but for Doctor Who, it's Christmas already. Matt Smith was spotted filming scenes for the festive episode in Bristol late last night (Monday) and it seems that he's gone back in time. Wearing a large top hat and an old-fashioned suit, the actor was transported back to the 1890's along with his co-star Jenna-Louise Coleman.

They have, but its been very subtly done. The problem with modern mass CGI effects is that they can achieve such magnificent results that there is a temptation for program makers to over-use them. The success of a program ultimately depends on the character interaction and the plot/storyline. Special effects need to be used to enhance, not replace, those elements. The best special effects are the ones that you dont notice, because you are concentrating on the tale that is being told. And modern Dr Who is pretty good at that.
