Man faces animal cruelty charge after abandoning dog on mountain

Washburn and his wife were incredulous at how this dog, tucked into a tiny nook between rocks, could have ended up where it was. The whimpering dog was, as Washburn said, "in awful shape." He was convinced it would have died if left without food or water for much longer. The couple tried to coax the dog up out of the rocks and down the mountain but it was clear the dog was too injured and weak to move.

"We knew we weren't going to be able to get her out by herself," said Washburn. "Her paws were completely raw and her elbows were torn up."

Washburn got together a group of eight volunteers and the group headed back up the mountain that Monday morning. The group found the dog with all of its wounds Washburn had tried to bandage reopened. The rocks around the dog were covered in blood, and the dog was back cowering beneath the surrounding rocks.

The group of eight hikers traveled through a full-blown snowstorm that broke out during their hike. Eventually, after a nine-hour rescue mission, the group successfully managed to bring back the broken and bruised dog in a hiker's oversized backpack.

“Most of those saying otherwise have never been in the position of needing to worry about losing their life.”

He brought the dog to that location with that weather approaching. The dog was his responsibility. I don’t think the dog can read a weather map. Substitute “dog” for “child” and rethink your position.

If you ever read that I’ve lost my mind completely and left one of my dogs to die somewhere, you have my written permission to put me out of your misery.

I’d deserve it and I’d accept it.

What is really heart braking is that the dog sat there for days probably
flinching with hope at every noise looking for his master.

I take comfort in knowing that with the attention the pet received it
will go to a good home. And someone will have a loyal pet.

He’s lucky I’m not the judge,

He’d get the max, each count to be served consecutively, without the possibility of parole.

He should have gone back up for the dog period. He blew it when he tried to “think”.

“[oh, wait...*I* care about my dogs...never mind]”

==

My little female shelties were always suburban girls that only walked on grass or paved sidewalks.

The one problem was salt on the sidewalks in winter but I dipped each little paw in a bowl of warm water to clean them off when we got home from our walks,

I loved them all.

I think he’d be willing to compromise if you upped his daily bacon and cheese ration.

*hug*

A lot of us have been there; we know how painful it is to lose (or put down) a good dog. If you feel up to telling Pookie stories, I would love to ‘hear’ them.

We buried her today.

I’m not really up for any Pookie stories right now.

Sorry.

Hose you down?

Yes, I understand.

I wasn’t allowed to have pets as a child and didn’t get my first cat until I was 34 years old.

It took me a while to learn about animals, how to treat them, how they think and react, and how I should react to them. For 15 years, we only had two cats, but after the first one died of CRF, we got my Rocket.

He taught me a lot, and I learned his lessons well.

We adopted two more cats, and the lessons continued. Lather, rinse, repeat through more rescues, and there were some who were too sick to be saved.

Now I believe that the piece of bat guano who abandoned his dog without even attempting a later rescue should be barred from owning pets of any kind for the rest of his life. He should be made to pay all the expenses of the people who saved Missy. He should forfeit ownership of Missy and pay “alimony” for her upkeep for her entire life. And he should be cited and fined for the most serious charges of animal abandonment and animal cruelty with which anyone may be charged.

We may have to hose each other down.

I’ve read several articles; the facts are sparse. No mention of the younger person’s age or inability to help with the dog, and nothing indicating that any human injuries were involved. I wonder how this all went over with Ortolani’s companion?

He decided the dog must be dead after the local authorities declined to rescue an animal.

I hope we hear more details when a judge prosecutes his case.
