Washburn and his wife were incredulous at how this dog, tucked into a tiny nook between rocks, could have ended up where it was. The whimpering dog was, as Washburn said, "in awful shape." He was convinced it would have died if left without food or water for much longer. The couple tried to coax the dog up out of the rocks and down the mountain but it was clear the dog was too injured and weak to move.
"We knew we weren't going to be able to get her out by herself," said Washburn. "Her paws were completely raw and her elbows were torn up."
Washburn got together a group of eight volunteers and the group headed back up the mountain that Monday morning. The group found the dog with all of its wounds Washburn had tried to bandage reopened. The rocks around the dog were covered in blood, and the dog was back cowering beneath the surrounding rocks.
The group of eight hikers traveled through a full-blown snowstorm that broke out during their hike. Eventually, after a nine-hour rescue mission, the group successfully managed to bring back the broken and bruised dog in a hiker's oversized backpack.

One of the accounts I read said the dog stopped following, but that she was still capable of moving. She was just tired and bloody and wouldn’t go further.
She was found in a hole between rocks. I doubt the original owner stuffed her in there. I also doubt the original owner COULD have found her, although I think he owed her the effort of trying.
Some value animal rights more than human rights. Amazing...

I doubt, as do you, that the original owner stuffed her in the rocks. She more than likely found her own shelter.
She was immobile when he left her. She was probably in the area. The article says not only were her paws torn up..so were her elbows. She likely crawled to a safer place in the area. He could have found her.
I know NOTHING about mountain climbing or hiking but wouldn’t the name Sawtooth be kind of a clue that it is rough terrain?
I just looked at images of the area and can’t imagine a dog with unprotected paws NOT being injured.

I spent enough time in the military to know there is a big difference between what you think you can do and what you CAN do. Same with dogs or horses.
I have no way of knowing for certain what happened on the original hike. I do strongly doubt there is justification for a criminal charge of abuse. That normally requires intentional infliction of injury.

As you say, you shouldn’t go up above timberline without being prepared to spend the night in safety. A full-tilt blizzard can blow in any time of the year.

The stupid bastard got up there himself once, he could’ve done it again.
He made the choice to travel “rough terrain”, the dog did not.
It went where it was taken.
That makes him solely, entirely and irrevocably responsible for what happened to the dog.
He doesn’t deserve to own a pet maggot.

It’s been my experience as a dog/cat/horse owner that they don’t lay down unless they can go no further. Their pain tolerance level far exceeds a humans.
What happened on the original hike really isn’t important, barring the fact that he took the dog in the mountains, was ill prepared to protect the dog, himself or his companion and failed to make an attempt to verify the death/or rescue “his property”. I can’t make a better analogy than someone else on this thread already has, he didn’t throw down his i-phone and walk away. What he left was a living, breathing creature.
Criminal charges? I’m divided on that. I would like to slap criminal charges on the cretins that dump their pets in the country and assume they will survive. That being said...he wants “his” dog back. Sorry, Charlie you left “your dog” on the mountain.

I didn’t go up dad’s mountain without a gun, cell phone, coat and water and it’s only a 4 mile ‘loop road’.
Stuff happens and 2 miles could seem like 2000.
