Contrast with kids learning by the family Bible, by the light of the fireplace, in frontier America. And then read the sort of political speeches they grew up to, in the first half of the 19th Century, in contrast to the 30 second sound-bite, and realize how civilization dies.

Absolutely.

Recently finished reading the Lincoln-Douglas debates.

This was farmers and workers standing around, often in hot summer sun, listening to two guys talk for a total of 3 hours, without benefit of a PA system.

Their discussions are so far beyond any political discussion of today that it is astonishing.
