Link didn’t help...so just to be clear, you’re experiencing a problem trying to view .pdf’s in IE, correct?

Are you running Vista? I think Vista is a virus as it is quite poor as an OS. You could try updating. I deleted Fire fox and reloaded it and am abandoning IE. Run your anti-virus also. I had a trojan also.

Just use Foxit and leave MS out of the loop.

Many people here are willing to offer suggestions but first you need to provide some background information about what it is you’re trying to do.

Check your ‘internet options’ to clear temp files when the browser (IE) is shut down.

Reboot.

I'm not going crazy afterall.

I am having the EXACT SAME problem, same message, I can not open a PDF file online. My Tech told me to Delete my Adobe and reinstall. Didn't work.

I work with a lot of genealogy files, and most of them online are in PDF, so when I Google something, a lot PDF files show up, but when you click on, I get the ERROR message as you.

Tells you to Debug by clicking RETRY. That does not work either, and you can't back out of this. Mostly I have to just X out of the internet and start over.

I even tried to reset my system to an earlier time, still did not work.

There are a finite number of possible problems. The solution will present itself but only after ruling out the impossible (to paraphrase Sherlock Holmes).

1) Are the PDFs corrupt? Probably not.
2) Is your version of Acrobat or Adobe Reader out of date or corrupt? Acrobat Reader is free - the most current version can be found at http://ninite.com
3) Instead of viewing the PDF in the browser, download it to your Windows desktop. Once downloaded, double-click it open in it in Reader. This takes the browser out of the equation entirely since you are simply opening a local document.
4) Assuming you are using Reader (the free version that does not allow editing/creation of PDFs) then uninstall and reinstall Reader and attempt to view PDFs in browser again.

In addition Ccleaner from http://piriform.com will clear temp files and other junk. Run it (save your browser cookies however) and attempt the process again.

Try a couple of things:

Open Adobe Reader
Open the Edit menu and select Preferences.
On the left hand side of the preferences window, select the Internet category.
Make sure to uncheck the “Display PDF in browser” option.

If that doesn't work, this is what fixes that sort of error for some of our users:

Open Adobe Reader

Click on Edit, then on Preferences

From the Categories on the left side, choose General

Uncheck "Enable Protected Mode at Startup"

I'm no techie, but I started having similar trouble opening PDFs after using a government online form that required me to change some of the settings on my browser. I don't recall if I simply went back and undid those settings or whether I clicked the option to restore Explorer to its initial installation settings, but that fixed me up.

That's a lot of if's and maybe's, all valid I'm sure. I just uninstalled Adobe and did a Reinstall last week. Same thing happened. All my Adobe's have been the FREE ones with never EVER a problem and it is up to date.

BUT: Your suggestiong #3...Download to Desktop...WORKED.

So: This is an Internet Explorer problem, just as it says it is in the ERROR message. I never had a problem opening a PDF file through the internet before.

Several programs are no longer playing nice with each other.

Several of the insane rapid release FireFox versions have had problems with PDF files.

Now, I just download the PDF and then open it in the standalone PDF viewer. [I use PDFExchange, rather than Adobe.]

I have had similar problems with IE and FF.

Adobe Flash would not work with the FF rapid release version 13.

I cringe every time I see software ‘upgrade’ or ‘update’ recommendations. Upgrades/updates seem to create more problems that they fix.

"""""I cringe every time I see software ‘upgrade’ or ‘update’ recommendations. Upgrades/updates seem to create more problems that they fix"""""

I AGREE, mostly I let them alone until I just can't stand their reminders any longer.

I have picked up several FIXES, ways around the problem on this thread.

One was to pull the PDF file to desktop: WORKED

Another: to change the internet preferances in ADOBE, to uncheck the PDF.

That last one worked with a cavaet:IE now gives me a warning box of: TO help protect your Security, Internet Explorer blocked this site from downloading files to your computer, click for options.....X

I can live with both these options. Leave it to VERY SMART FREEPERS, THANKS.

Adobe Reader X is a nightmare! There also is a known issue when a user tries to open up a .pdf attachment in Outlook 2010 it closes. I had to go to edit—>preferences—>security (enhanced) and then uncheck the enhanced security “feature.” then I added an ADM in group policies to keep that from reverting back to the default the next time adobe update goes through.

Odds are that the next adobe/IE update comes by it will reset it back to the original internet preferences setting; maybe not but usually yes.

That worked for me with a cavaet: Now IE has a warning box on top: To protect your Security, internet explorer blocked this site from downloading files to your computer, click for options........X

BUT, I can live with that.

THANKS, your a great help. Now I will go look at your links.

Oh, bless your heart. You are speaking GREEK to me, lol on me. Laughing so hard now, only my 8 yr old DOWNs grandson could tell me what you are saying.

Don't take that personnel, it is just that I am so darned computer illiterate. I can follow directions if lined out as step 1,2 and 3. Nothing else means anything.

I'm old, I don't want to learn anymore, but they force me.
