Help with A/C motor wiring

Posted on 07/27/2012 9:02:40 AM PDT by finish9

Please help.

I am trying to wire am A/C motor to 115v and I don't understand the wiring diagram. It shows 1,3 and 8 (1-3-8) connected, 4 (-4) wire standalone and 2, J and 5 (-2-J-5) connectd.

My "text" drawing didn't work so I hope this makes sense.

Does the black (hot) connect to 1,3 and 8 wires of the motor and the white to 4 and green to 2,J and 5?

This is a Baldor Ind 115/230 .5 hp motor.

Thanks in advance!

The last time I gave advice on electrical wiring, it caused a five state blackout.

See if you can find a link to the diagram on the Baldor or maybe Grangers site and I will tell you how. Don’t want to guess at it from your post.

Need more info. What is the motor model number? This will give us something to look up a cutsheet on.

The black wires are all hot leads (need power). Motor starter? controller? ......

Maybe this will help.

If (and only if) the diagram is identical, you jumper or otherwise connect 1-3-8 and that triple-junction connects to one side of the 120 volt AC line. HOWEVER, you should NOT make that triple connection on a rugged, permanent basis before you determine whether the motor turns in the direction you wish, because you can change rotation direction by swapping #5 and #8. So, you should splice 1-3-8 together “non-permanently” while you test direction.

The other side of the AC line goes to #4. Period. Full stop.

5-J-2 are connected together but go NOWHERE, they are just connected together. Again, do not make that triple junction on a permanent basis until you figure out if the motor goes the direction you want.

The ground of the AC line goes to the frame of the motor.

to change rotation to cw, interchange 8 & 5

Considering your level of expertise, I’d first stock-up on bandages, burn cream, and eye patches. Good luck!

Wait! Noooo!

I saw something similar once....

"Cut the blue wire...

But first make sure you've disconnected the orange wire and removed the batteries...

This is a Baldor Ind 115/230 .5 hp motor.

Every motor is marked with a model number.

If you aren't even aware of that, and its importance, you shouldn't be monkeying with it.
