The first drug laws were passed because too many people died from “legal” drugs (e.g. many babies died from being given too much “teething medicine” that included morphine) and the epidemic of morphine addicts, many of whom got addicted because they were unaware of the addiction potential of over the counter pain medicines.
Making the drugs illegal worked, until the 1960’s groups made drug taking glamourous and popular...
but no one wants to connect the dots between drug use and social problems: American cars became shoddy due to drug use in the plants became common, many car accidents from drug use (and since marijuana has a slow half life, it affects the brain longer than alcohol).Then you have the drug culture side effects: Pleasure before taking care of the kids (one million kids brought up by grandparents or relatives, not to mention those in foster homes)...etc etc.
I blame the churches, who never had the guts to preach the gospel...if the churches did their job, you wouldn’t need laws, but never mind...
