Does anyone (or anyone's Mrs.) use cross-stitching software that allows you to upload an image and it produces a pattern for you?
I was thinking of getting it for my mother, but don't want to give one that doesn't work well. There's a free service online, but apparently it doesn't work as well as desired.
Have any Freepers tried any of them? Are there any that can be bought in a store, or are they all online downloads?
Thanks as always.
One major vendor (googled for cross stitching software) offers a trialware which won’t print or save. But it would be possible to view the quality of the result, and for a hard core stitcher they could stitch off of the screen. If it’s OK then it sells for about $50. Support some geek-ettes and consider their product.
It’s been a while, but I bought a cross-stitch program for my daughter and on the box it said that you could scan graphics, pictures, and photographs, and it would make a pattern AND tell you the stock numbers of the thread colors you would need, from three different manufacturers. Sorry, but I don’t remember the name of the software now. I don’t think she ever used it because she doesn’t have a scanner.
The most popular program seems to be PCStitch. I know many people love it. I know a really fast, reliable store with good prices. Let me know if you want the address.
This post threw me for a loop. I have my cross stitching site open in another tab, and I did a double take to make sure which site this was on. :)
We’ve used PCStitch 7 for many portraits and had good results, It’s now up to version 10, Getting the color palette right can take some trial and error.
I actually considered writing this type of software with a friend in the early 1990’s with a friend, but I moved before we got anywhere with it. Apparently, there was a small, but good market!

I should have mentioned she uses a Mac.
This may limit or widen the possibilities... though I think PCStitch is so named for a reason. (And it looks very nice.)
Any opinions on Mac-only programs?
I just googled “mac cross stitch program” and found two or three such programs. Have no familiarity with any of them, but you might want to take a look.
I have a Mac, and have been happy with MacStitch. I am still using an older version (2008), and haven’t yet discovered all the new bells and whistles in the latest version.

Might want to check it out.
There’s a freeware program called Hugin that might do the job:

I have not tried it, but it looks good,
Hugin “stitches” together 2 or more pictures to make landscapes.
Thanks, everyone, for your opinions and suggestions. I’m downloading some demos to my computer to test.
My mom would be interested in this... she is a seamstress and is trying to get http://vintagelinensandlace.com going (shameless plug).
Please come back later and tell us what you found. I had never even thought of doing such a thing, but grandma (me) might just love to make something special for the kids... not sure what exactly, but it’s July and there’s a great idea in this somewhere.
Maybe we should start a chat thread showing some of our finishes. I know of several other cross stitchers who would probably join in. :)
can you use PC stitch to design original designs too? I’ve always wanted to do stuff like that, but I don’t think I’m creative enough :( The work of some cross stitch designers just pusts me in awe.
PCStitch Pro is a great program. It can develop a pattern from any scanned or existing picture file and, as well, you can use it to create original designs. I have used it extensively both ways for myself and my wife. Good luck!
