Screen legend Peter O'Toole announced today that he is retiring from acting.
"It's time for me to chuck in the sponge," he said in a statement. "To retire from stage and screen. The heart for it has gone out of me; it won't come back."
O'Toole, who turns 80 on Aug. 2, achieved international stardom and his first Oscar nomination for David Lean's 1962's Academy Award-winning epic "Lawrence of Arabia." O'Toole was 27 when he earned the coveted title role. When he was cast in 1960, The Times quoted a London critic who called the young actor "a blazing new talent."
At the time, O'Toole was known mainly for his work on stage. But producer Sam Spiegel told The Times he wanted a new face for the part of T.E. Lawrence.
O'Toole went on to earn best actor nominations -- but no wins -- for 1964's "Becket," 1968's "The Lion in Winter," 1969's "Goodbye, Mr. Chips," 1972's "The Ruling Class," 1980's "The Stunt Man," 1982's "My Favorite Year" and 2006's "Venus." He earned an honorary Oscar in 2003.
This Tuesday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is presenting the U.S. premiere of the new digital restoration of "Lawrence of Arabia" at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

Thanks - I added some movies to my Netflix queue.
That was a great flick!
They don’t make films or planes(I believe a “KIngfisher”) like that anymore.
imdb....lefty pc pigfest....but i use it too admittedly
LAWRENCE OF ARABIA was not O’Toole’s first movie with Anthony Quinn. That would be THE SAVAGE INNOCENTS (1960).

I watched them film parts of the movie “The Stuntman” back in 1980 in Sacramento along the American River.
O’Toole was totally cold to any spectators in the area, basically ignored everyone, but the other actors and crew.
I was standing next to these 2 ladies (sounded like they were English) that were just devout fans, when he walked right past us. They were trying to get his autograph, and he acted like they didn’t even exist! He wouldn’t even say hi, look at them, or anything!
He wasn’t walking or talking with anyone... All by himself, right in front of our faces! I was thinking... “Man, what a bunghole!”
If that’s not the way he is, he sure left a crappy impression.
Now Alex Rocco, who was also in the movie was a TOTALLY COOL dude! He talked with anyone that wanted to talk with him, took pictures with anyone, even putting his arms around the people in the shots!
Never noticed, or gave it much thought, actually. I just go there to look up some basic movie info. The database looks pretty comprehensive, no need to inject politics into *everything*...
Could be, but I've never got that feeling. I think he had lots of crazy stories that were true. Guess we will never know.
What a gawd-awful person.
Thank you.
He is not well in the head. It sounds as if he is also a mean drunk.
Goodbye T.E. Lawrence, Lord Jim, and King of England! Had the pleasure of seeing O’Toole live in the West End doing a Shaw play. Wonderful.
Loved the references to LoA in PROMOTHEUS. David the robot wanted to be Lawrence.....
Hey,M,just wanted to say hi!
Hope all is well down Panama way.

Some people don’t like to be disturbed while they’re at work. Do you like being asked for an autograph while serving customers their french fries at Mickey D’s?
One person’s impression of an encounter with someone out of one day of their life makes them a “gawd-awful person”. I need to be executed then because I’ve had lots of days when I’ve been less than pleasant.
Thumbs up. That was a good zinger. I also like where Auda says to Ali, “You’re easily flattered. I knew your father well.” Ali replies, “Did you know your own?”
Hey, E!!!
You are always so kind.
It is always good to hear from you.
No Scout cookies in Panama yet. I have checked and checked because there are Scouts in Panama. And nada.
You won’t believe the delicious mangos we have here. Yummy. I purchased a mango the other day that weighed over a pound. I tried but couldn’t finish it. I tried over a few days, but I finally had to trash it. I felt terrible.
Things are going well here...much, much better than the U.S. I worry so much about our country, the U.S., that many times I can’t sleep well. I wish it were just a bad dream, but it isn’t.
Thank you again for your post.
My best to you.
