A jogger suffered numerous scratches and wounds after she was attacked by a family of raccoons in Lakewood that may have been startled by her dog.
An animal control officer was called to a home near Fort Steilacoom Park at 1:30 p.m. Monday where medics were treating the woman for about 28 marks on her body that were a combination of scratches and about six bite wounds.
The woman, Michaela Lee, said she had been jogging near the edge of the park with her dog when it got away from her and may have gone after a family of raccoons.
Suddenly and without warning, the raccoons came after her, Lee told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Kevin McCarty.
"Three other raccoons charged me. They came out of the grass and they were just biting and scratching my legs," Lee said.
As she tried to escape, the raccoons kept coming -- knocking her down in the front yard of her home near 98th and Farwest.
"They stayed with me, and they were clawing the back of my legs, and they tripped me and I fell down. And they were just on me," Lee said.
Lee says her dog, Matty, quickly came to her rescue.
"Just teeth bared, growling and came at the raccoons and gave me time. I picked one of the raccoons up and instinctively flung it and she gave me time to get up and defend myself."
Lee was transported to the hospital for her injuries.
An animal control officer said he believed the attack stemmed from the mother raccoon trying to protect its young.
The dog was not hurt.
Lee says despite the attack, she won't stop running in the park. But she'll...

But raccoons are our cuddly forest friends.
LOL
Coons and bath salts
The deadly mix
Pretty pathetic when a full grown human being WITH A DOG gets her ass kicked by a raccoon.
Better her dog stirred up a racoon nest than a hornet nest. You can fight the raccoons, all you can do with the hornets is run for your life.
I sure hope they weren’t rabid.
LOL no kidding, a coon can put a hurt on ya.
This may have been her wake up call from her guardian angel. Raccoons this time, next time it may be something bigger and badder. She might consider some lead as well.

You obviously don’t understand raccoons well. I have encountered some that are pretty bad-ASSED. Last summer on a 118 degree day here in south TX, I was lucky to come away unscathed with TWO dogs with me.

Exactly right. I live in WA and they just showed the story on the news....there was more than one racoon that attacked her. Her dog did save her from further harm. She did seem a bit more calm than I would have been. But I also wouldn’t run in the area she was running in...with or without a dog.
I love that story ... still makes me laugh.
But then again, one of my kids was at great falls recently, snoozing in a hammock, and a coon jumped into the hammock with him, for a little kiss and a cuddle.
Guess how many rabies shots my kid got.
Doc said, “That is not normal coon behavior - you get the shots!”
My guess is she had her dog off the lease and that was the start of her problems. People who have their animals off leash in a public park are asking for problems. She could have easily done her best Sir Robin impression and ran away.
They’re all around where i live. I yell and stamp my foot and they run like a rabbit.
