Beach-goers in China wear nylon masks to beat the sun's rays
In a radical approach to protecting themselves from the sun, beach-goers in Qingdao, China's Shandong province don colourful nylon masks over their heads.
The mask, which was invented by a woman about seven years ago, is used to block the sun's rays.
The mask is under mass production and is on sale at local swimwear stores.
However, the masks are still rare on the beach, with more swimmers sticking with good old sunscreen.

Absolutely beautiful.
Problem is, “what has been seen cannot be unseen.”
I believe all nobama minions and supporters should wear these for easy identification. That would help our society immensely.
They look like professional wrestlers...
Welll that’s just stupid looking. Use sunscreen.
Are you sure it isn’t shift change at the nearest casino?
It's not a new trend, the same four people are in all the shots. Nobody in the background has a mask.
Except for the occasional tootsie rolls...
Certainly Yalong Bay has the best beach in all of China. Hainan is the island where the US spy plane was forced to crash land after Wong Wei tried to bring it down by colliding with it over the South China Sea. Prior to that I was not aware that there was a large Chinese military installation on the island despite the fact that I visited Hainan Island back in 1999.
The Chinese were attempting to develop Hainan as the Asian Hawaii. Of course today Sanya is a fairly well-known city because it has hosted the Miss World beauty contest there in the past.
“Certainly Yalong Bay has the best beach in all of China.”
Have you been there?
Out of curiousity I googled Yalong Bay.
There appear to be two types of pictures. Pictures by actual tourists of a brownish beach with somewhat bluish water.
And promotional type photos that show it to have the most blindingly white sand in the known universe, and water the color of ‘glacier freeze’ gatorade.
I’m thinking reality doesn’t quite jive with what China is presenting to the World.
Yes, I stayed in Yalong Bay in 1999. At the time there were only a couple of 5 star hotels and there were many abandoned (half-way constructed) buidings/homes because of the construction bust. The water in Yalong Bay beach was nice and clear.
Sanya is the big city on the island and its beaches are less clean and the water is brownish. So there is a difference of the quality of the water/beach depending on the location.
That was true in the Victorian age in England and Europe too. Tanning was not popular.
I like her mask. Colorful, nicely sized and appropriately placed. :-)
That’s weird.
I was surprised by how overweight chinese women have become.
*Everyone OUT OF THE POOL!* :)
I hope she’s older than she looks. If so, then, oh yeah!

Could take awhile.
