Residents from Chula Vista to Oceanside reported a large rumble around 12:45 p.m. Friday.
The mysterious sensation was described by some people as sounding like a door slamming while others said it was strong enough to rattle windows.
A check of the U.S. Geological Survey website showed no earthquake activity.
NBC 7 San Diego's Dagmar Midcap was in Del Mar at the time and described it as a "Sonic 'rumble'" She tweeted, "according to my contacts at USGS, not seismic but rather sonic."
Two months ago, when San Diegans heard a similar sound, there was evidence of chaff on weather radar. Chaff is a material sometimes emitted during military exercises.

The mysterious sound had both residents and experts scratching their heads. Scripps Institution of Oceanography scientist Kristoffer Walker said he felt it too, and looked into microphones recorded from MCAS Miramar.
Evidence from his research revealed an answer.
"There was indeed an atmospheric tremor, or 'skyquake,'" Walker said. "The likely cause of these "skyquakes" is routinely military activity very far off the coast of San Diego (at least 50 miles away) in zones that are designated military training zones."
Typically, we don't hear these "skyquakes." But when the wind reaches speeds of over 100 miles per hour, the sound can reach parts of San Diego, Walker said.
A spokesperson from Camp Pendleton said Marines are not training with anything unusual. They often train with various military equipment and will be training with tanks both Saturday and Sunday

Sounds like Groom Lake is flying a Mach 3+ interceptor again (no pun intended).
The First Lady was there for a fundraiser, and I’m told she had the bean burritos for lunch.
Toxic vapors!
That’s the collective sound of the Founding Fathers’ hearts breaking.
Indeed!
Unpossible!! No such place exists ;)
Seriously though, have we become so regulated than no one remembers a sonic boom anymore?
Two possibilities come to mind. The more obvious one is that the USAF is going supersonic off the southern coast of California, which is about the only place in the US where they can do it. The government of San Diego has complained about this to the USAF in past.
The less obvious one is that the noise is being caused by a huge amount of ultra-low frequency radio signals in the atmosphere above the area just prior (”a few days”) to a major earthquake.
Before the M9 earthquake in Japan, the total electron content of the ionosphere increased dramatically over the epicentre, reaching a maximum three days before the quake struck.
At the same time, satellite observations showed a big increase in infrared emissions from above the epicentre, which peaked in the hours before the quake. In other words, the atmosphere was heating up.
The thinking is that in the days before an earthquake, the great stresses in a fault as it is about to give cause the releases large amounts of radon.
The radioactivity from this gas ionises the air on a large scale and this has a number of knock on effects. Since water molecules are attracted to ions in the air, ionisation triggers the large scale condensation of water.
But the process of condensation also releases heat and it is this that causes infrared emissions. This amount of energy might in some way also cause a major sonic effect.
Yet again, it is far more likely that it’s the USAF again.
I’m in San Diego and I heard nothing.

I thought it was foil-like strips dropped to screw-up radar imaging?

A couple of years ago I was fishing on a party boat about 30 miles off of Maryland and heard a deafening crack behind me, almost dropped my rod in the water - turned around and it was an F-15 from Langley AFB in VA that couldn't have been more than 500 ft ASL and less than a mile, maybe 1/2 mile, away - had essentially buzzed us at supersonic.
Was pretty cool but boy it's not a boom if you're close - it's just like a crack of extremely close thunder.
And all of us, too..... :(
Just a weather balloon folks.
It was caused by a shift in the Earth’s axis brought about by the intense spinning of the Robert’s Obamacare decision by the Republican intelligentsia.
It rattled my windows significantly near the I-5/I-805 merge.
We thought it was an earthquake. Just north of Del Dios Highway.
One night in San Diego, living on the beach, I jumped out of bed because an M60 was being fired heavily only a few thousand meters inland from me, which made me feel awful naked with my 9mm pistol.
It turned out that many thousands of people heard it and that it was caused by an atmospheric event, the gun was actually way out in the ocean, involved in a Navy exercise.
