A Bexar County Jail inmate who committed suicide with a plastic spoon apparently did so by inserting the utensil into an artery through which he was getting dialysis treatment, officials said.
Robert Rodriguez, 29, was found unconscious and bleeding by a guard in the administrative segregation unit about noon Wednesday, said Bexar County sheriff’s Deputy Chief Ronald Bennett.
Officials with the Bexar County’s medical examiner’s office said today that the man died of a self-inflicted laceration of the upper extremity.
He had a shunt in his arm used during dialysis treatments, Bennett said by email. He removed the shunt and inserted the plastic utensil, causing severe bleeding from his arm.
A dialysis shunt is a passage formed between an artery and a vein to help remove waste products from the blood mechanically.
Rodriguez had apparently sharpened the spoon before stabbing himself, Bennett said.
The inmate was arrested June 9 on misdemeanor charges of criminal trespass and possession of a controlled substance, and was booked into the jail’s detoxification unit the next day.
Bennett said that at some point, he was placed on administrative segregation, or lockdown. He wasn’t on suicide watch, officials said.
Whew!, it's good to know he used a sharpened plastic spoon instead of a dull one, could've ended it tragedy.
