In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

subitize \SOO-bi-tahyz\, verb
To perceive at a glance the number of items presented.

Example sentences:
Below seven the subjects were said to subitize; above seven they were said to estimate.
-- H. Gutfreund and G. Toulouse, Biology and Computation: A Physicist's Choice

I wanted to see if Pedro could subitize, so I asked, “Pedro, how many stars are in the first circle?”
-- Melissa Conklin, It Makes Sense!

Etymology:
Subitize comes from the Latin word subitāre which meant "to appear suddenly".

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Subitize

“Is that a U-boat?”

“It’s not-a my boat.”

Anyway, I subitize in units of five or fewer. It’s convenient when counting coins for rolling, and for other quick-counting procedures. It seems to be more a matter of developing a healthy habit than of any innate ability.

Hmmmn.

What’s more painful?

A bunion or a big govt union? (A union with a big govt?)

I know. I’m all knotted up about it and have to hit the park now since it’s supposed to hit 99 here today.

Imagine if the Court actually started rolling back the New Deal “understanding” of the commerce clause. Today could be a very big turning point indeed.

As a child, my family had a cat that dropped a litter of five kittens. If we took one of the newborns to play with, the mother would search frantically for it. That raised the question of whether a cat could count to five. The answer is, apparently, they can subitize.

One could subitize from the 2000+ page “Affordable” Health Care Act that it was another attempt to subsidize Democrat interests...

Can the Court subitize
To the count of five?
Overturn it now.

No one in the whole country, much less Congress, was able to subitize the costs of Obamacare before they signed the Bill.

Win, lose or muddled middle, we need to prevent Obama from putting any more people on the Court. No matter what happens today, it magnifies this fall’s election’s consequences.

It’s a clash of visions and I don’t see how it can’t be a huge issue this fall.

Did you see the lady on Hannity saying that no matter what happens, Obama should act calm and reasoned and wait a few days before making any statement? I turned to my daughter and said “no way he acts like that.”

She thought it was hilarious that he threw a tantrum and ripped up the immigration enforcement agreement with Arizona cause he lost.
