Biographer admits: There was no Obama family!

"Exclusive: Jack Cashill notes Maraniss book puts lie to O's 'improbable love' claim"

Excerpt....In all the talk about David Maraniss’ new book, “Barack Obama: The Story,” the chattering classes seem to have overlooked the most significant of Maraniss’ revelations, namely that the story on which Obama based his 2008 candidacy is “received myth, not the truth.”

“My parents shared not only an improbable love,” said Obama famously in his 2004 Democratic Convention keynote, “they shared an abiding faith in the possibilities of this nation.” This concept of multicultural romance shaped his persona and his campaigns.

At the 2008 Democratic Convention in Denver, Obama leaped into the story in the very first sentence. “Four years ago,” he began, “I stood before you and told you my story – of the brief union between a young man from Kenya and a young woman from Kansas who weren’t well-off or well-known, but shared a belief that in America, their son could achieve whatever he put his mind to.”

As Maraniss concedes, these two young people shared very close to nothing. “In the college life of Barack Obama in 1961 and 1962,” writes Maraniss, “as recounted by his friends and acquaintances in Honolulu, there was no Ann; there was no baby.”

Although Maraniss talked to many of Obama Sr.’s friends, none of the credible ones ever so much as saw him with Obama’s ........

I'm guessing the garage might have been turned into living quarters without a permit. The structure appears to be still shown as a garage on the 2012 updated sketch. The question is, when? The building doesn't look 20' wide, and the construction materials appear to be quite modern, not something from the late fifties or sixties.

bgill, I still don’t see any second page where it shows a rental.

Fred, type in http://www.hololulupropertyassessment.com./
then in that window type in 6085 Kalanianaole Hwy you will then get a window with the name SMETHURST, NANI C click on her name. Then on the left you will see all the tabs with the information I show below. It doesn’t appear to be any different then the one I had posted in 2008. I have no idea where bgill is coming up with rental property.

Let me know if this worked for you.

That is strange that there is a drawing of the layout at the link and it shows properties but when you try to post it, it doesn't come out.

IF that garage had been remodled for a rental property someone would have had to get a permit for it. The only permit showing is for a fence on 12-14-95

thanks, I think I might have figured out what could have happened, of course the data that is there is the same as what you posted so long ago...

There WAS a garage on the property, and as far as the records show, it’s still there. But somewhere along the way, goodness knows how long ago, that garage was replaced by a small cottage, and probably without a permit.

After 15 years in the building industry, one sees with a certain eye...and that ‘path’ that runs alongside the cottage is actually the remainder of the concrete floor of the garage which WAS 20’ wide.

The cottage rests upon the original garage floor. There’s the 20’ width. And the taxes are being assessed on the basis of an unattached garage which is no longer there....naughty.

Without a permit, there’s no record. But I’ll bet my boots that little cottage dates from the seventies. And they have no permit for the plumbing or power connection either...I’m guessing. Oh boy...I wish I hadn’t looked.

It’s now NOT AVAILABLE!

It's still there, you just have to go back to the site and click the sketch tab. I don't know why it won't let us copy it.

Where did you get that picture from? Since the house is a backward L shape with a porch sitting under the L, I do believe that picture you are showing is the bedroom wing of the house, not a converted garage.

I know how property assessements work. Every so many years an Assessor comes around to check the property, and IF that garage had been converted to a rental, they would have found it out. Also remember this property has been sold how many times? This shows 12-15-92 and again on 4-21-95. There is NO WAY that this assessment 2012 would not have shown that there was a livable dwelling on that property if there was.

you can bring it up if you go through the same process again, but if you catch 'properties' and post it, bingo, like the Chershire Cat, it's gone! I'm posting it again to see how long the image lasts.

Can’t Save the image either. Very odd.

I follow. Been tricked again, have we? The image of the ‘cottage’ is all over the web, I just Googled ‘Dunham House in Hawaii’ - seriously though, the house was built in the forties, correct? The building materials used on that ‘cottage’ if it really is part of the main house, suggests major updates and renovations. Looks like plastic plumbing, aluminium windows, and colour-bonded metal wall cladding, none of which were in use when that house was built.
It really does seem to me that there’s some kind of demountable kit form type of building has been placed on the concrete floor where the garage used to be.

...Where did you get that picture from?

I thought I should make it clear, that is the 'cottage' which it is claimed, was the residence of the mother and child for the short period she was in residence in Honolulu, before she disappeared...she was living there on her own just long enough to be listed there as Ann S Obama, and have the birth announcement appear and then show up in Seattle as Anna Obama...the 'cottage' is now even more necessary as the result of the information that Mr & Mrs Pratt and their daughter were sharing the house with the Dunhams. But if you look at the sketch of the buildings on the property, now I can't find the the location of the cottage at all! There's still only a house, a garage and porch. And the sketch doesn't include the so called cottage at all.

That’s the sketch for the rental unit but you have to go the the second page of the residential tab to get the stats for it. What you have is page one for the big house’s stats.

bgill, I still don’t see any second page where it shows a rental.

At the top right hand corner of the "residential" tab, you will see a page 1 which is showing the main house and garage. Click on the right arrow in that page box and it will take you to page 2 which will show the stats for the rental. The page box on the "residential" tab is in the same area as the one you found on the "sketch" tab of the rental.

That’s the URL for the sketch page, it says PAGE 1 of 1.

SO WHERE IS THIS PAGE 2?

And how is information that was updated in 2012 going to tell us what was there in early 1960?

The sketch doesn’t even match what is there NOW, according to Google Earth.

Here's what I just copied off page 1 of the "residential" tab:

Property Class Please select the Land Details tab.

Card 1

Story Height 1

Occupancy SINGLE-FAMILY

Full Baths 1

Total Living Area 1440

Bedrooms 4

Year Built 1948

Eff. Year Built 1952

First Floor Living Area 1440

Half Baths

Here's page two with the rental:

Property Class Please select the Land Details tab.

Card 2 (do you see it says "CARD 2", that's page two)

Story Height 1

Occupancy SINGLE-FAMILY

Full Baths 1

Total Living Area 448

Bedrooms 1

Year Built 1953

Eff. Year Built

First Floor Living Area 448

Half Baths

I am not going to post the sketch as imo it shouldn't be on a public forum. Yes, it's on the site and out for the public but so be it. Yes, both sketches and stats are still on the tax site. The google street view shows where the rental is placed on the property and like I said yesterday, it's best viewed by traveling up to the next door neighbor's drive and looking back. Also on google maps, you can see from the basic overview the layout of the main house, garage, rental, etc. The google visuals match the tax information.

have a quick look at comment #108, that's what I get on page two. Everytime I bring up the sketch page, the image appears. And then a few minutes later, It's gone.

There's a seperate rectangular shape that appears to have the same measurements as the 'cottage' - it's 14 wide, which makes it about right.

Looks like two different lots, two assessments, and still no idication of when it was built...but it does look like it's standing on the concrete floor of where a previous structure stood, and at 32' foot long, it's certainly too long for a garage. I give up.

Ok...now there’s the important bit...YEAR BUILT 1953. So there WAS something there, and has been replaced, because that structure hasn’t been there since 1952. Could have been a stable, for all we know.
Thanks for your help.

If you read the comments I made in connection with the structure, it should be obvious; the building materials used appear to be too modern.
The information you provided shows there was something there that was built in 1953.
Therefor there’s no way you can call it a rental unit in relation to what was there in 1961. It could have been a stable.
I’m basing my observations on experience in the building industry. What you see isn’t 60 years old.
