KEY WEST, Fla.-- Residents of Key West, Fla., who live in their vehicles are objecting to officials seeking to ban "lodging" in vehicles.
The Key West City Commission approved the new rules June 5, but the law must still pass a second public hearing and approval before it takes effect, KeysNet.com reported Thursday.
The ordinance, which was proposed by Mayor Craig Cates, states "lodging" in vehicles "constitutes a hazard to the health and safety of the residents (and) visitors to the city" and has "a significant negative impact that creates an adverse effect on tourism and the environment."
Kurt Wagner, who said he lives in a 1999 Dodge, said he objects to the law.
it’s not the sleeping that KW is trying to abolish;it’s people LIVING/LODGING in their vehicles. I’m one of those people. I spoke out at the city commission meeting. the city says we are a “hazard to other people and cause a “significant negative imapcton tourism”. What a bunch of crap!! and check this beauty out too. recently they passed a law where a person can be ARRESTED if they are in a park and their bicycle is not in a bike rack !! the city commission has gome MAD!
I live in a van in Key West. my driver’s license shows my address to be 148NAV, the same as my vehicle license plate. I get my meager Soc. Sec. check via direct deposit. and it is NOT enough to pay rent for a room in a house, much less have $$ left for food and other needs. so my van is my home.
KW had a law banning sleeping in vehicles; it was declared unconstitutional 18 years ago. next came a “camping” law. they recently found they couldn’t use it against people living in their vehicles. So now the no”lodging” in your vehicle law. the very day it passed and became enforceable, I asked, in a formal court motion, to have a local judge issue an IMMEDIATE temporary injunction barring the KWPD from enforcing the law and demanding a hearing to see if the law is constitutional. I obviously think it is not. judge’s secretary said he couldn’t rule on the motion be cause “there isn’t an active case” what do I have to do—get arrested first?
I wounder if all states accept license plates as an address?
