GROTON, Conn. (AP) _ A Groton shipyard has held a ceremony to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the keel-laying for USS Nautilus, the first nuclear-powered submarine.
It was on June 14 in 1952 that President Harry Truman officiated at the construction milestone for the submarine at the Electric Boat shipyard.

BTW, I saw them launch the USS OHIO at that shipyard.
I had no idea that it had been converted from SSBN to SSGN. Cool!

I worked on 2 slow attack conversions, USS George Washington and USS John Marshall
I was a a CTM rider.
I remember It fondly but it was hard work, 16 hour shifts and a lot of sacrifice.
What I liked was the responsibility and trust that people gave you.
I also liked the no nonsense atmosphere.
I installed and maintained whiz bang Spook gear for spec ops.
Every mission was a spec op.
I meant to send that privately.
Now I’ll have to kill myself LOL
your secrets safe with us..
LOL
I hardly think it matters since all those boats are razor blades now.
true. thank goodness you’ve maintained your sense of humour.
Yes. The first 4 Ohio class SSBNs(Ohio, Florida, Georgia, Michigan) were converted to SSGNs. Each missile tube has a 7 cell VLS. Each boat can carry a total of 154 Tomahawks.
What was done with the missile tubes on George Washington and John Marshall? I heard they were filled with concrete.
The hull was cut and shortened, then the remaining tubes were filled with concrete
