LOS ANGELES (CBS) The divorce rate is soaring among people in their 50s and its most often the wife who wants out.
Since 1990, the divorce rate has doubled to 1 in 4 among couples over 50 years old, who are also referred to as empty nesters.
The trend is being called Grey Divorce and is outlined in a study published by Bowling Green State University.
Century City Family Divorce Attorney Marlo Von Oorschot wrote a book on the subject.
People look at their marriages and say I could live til Im 90 years old and do I wanna stay in this marriage?
*In addition to longevity, women are sometimes more financially independent than before, theres less social pressure to stay married and more focus on individual happiness.
A national survey conducted by AARP finds the majority of split ups are being initiated by women.
Women in their 40s, 50s, 6os still feel very youthful and, if youre in a marriage where your needs arent being met, we have choices today, Von Oorschot said.
That may be why dating websites catering to that generation are growing in popularity.
But Von Oorschot said while divorce is a difficult decision at any age it can come with more risks at a later age.
The plans this couple had for 20, 30 years to retire at a certain age are derailed, the attorney said.
Older couples undergoing divorce may be forced to have to start working again and losing health benefits.
But some believe that when a person is no longer in sync with their partner it can be much more rewarding to tend to their own needs
CCRN (critical care), her patients are generally unconscious.
Women in their 50s and 60s are deep into menopause. Unlikely they will attract young studs or whatever their fantasy is.
I am a baby boomer, I’m 54. The baby boomer generation extends until those born in 1964 I believe.
Also, the article notes that this trend started in 1990, when those baby boomers now in their 70s were in their 50s.
The hippies of the 1960s are baby boomers.
Hit on by Laz....
Is that a compliment or not?
If only I was available Darlin, if only..
My wife and I are very senior citizens and having been married and in love for over 57 years. We look askance at the marriages of our sons. We, wife and I,have had our spats but the bond of our marriage has many ties. She was a very attractive Swedish maiden visiting with relatives. I was just out of college after WWII service trying to establish myself in the engineering field and not to bad of a looking guy. I have to admit there was a mutual physical attraction which never hurts in setting up a relationship. However, we were married on/with a financial shoestring, saving pennies for special occasions. I am positive that when my wife said yes she really intended to be my career and emotional supporter. I can honestly say that my thoughts were to give my wife a life that satisfied her home and emotional expectations of marriage. My wife has never, and I emphasize never, even in arguments uttered any vulgar or profane word/expression. I asked her about this and she said that was the way she was raised and taught to behave. My point in this story is that in marriage ,man and women, each party must have the welfare of the other party first and foremost and have character to do such.
Stupid IPad, sorry about the dup posts
No boomers have reached 70, and the 1960s was mostly the creation and operation of the ‘silent generation’ (1925-1945) with many young boomers joining them as youth to hear their music and go to their festivals and concerts, and to buy their drugs.
In 1966 boomers ranged from age 2 years old to 20 years old.
The people we know from the hippies were almost all ‘silent generation’ people. People like, Bob Seger, Jane Fonda, John Denver, Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Peter Paul & Mary, Grace Slick, Neil Young , Beatles, Van Morrison, Joan Baez, Jerry Garcia, Pete Townsend, Joe Cocker, Judy Collins, Jimmy Page, Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan, Williams Ayers, Bernadette Dohrn, Chicago Seven, Rod Stewart, Abbie Hoffman, Hunter S. Thompson, Malcom X, Charles Manson, Brian Wilson, The Beatles, and the Rolling Stones, the Jefferson Airplane, and the Mamas and the Papas, Jimmy Page, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, etc, etc, etc, just about everyone that you can name.
spot on. I didn’t do the math too well. The first boomers (born in 46) are no older than 66 years old.
I never actually knew all the folks you mention, I’m just thinking of all my eldest brother’s (RIP) hippie friends who were pretty much as you describe. But they were all boomers. Born in 1950 or so.
Without question millions of the boomers who were old enough, participated in the 1960s, they just weren’t the true generation of the 60s.
In 1960 the Beatniks were already well established and were becoming the hippies, the oldest boomer on the planet was only 14 years old. By 1969 the oldest boomer was 23 and the youngest 5 years old, yet many people have them running the Congress, the Senate, the Presidency, the 1960s and the Vietnam War, the Supreme Court, passing all of the bad legislation, running the University systems, running television and the media, movies, and on and on.
The boomers didn’t really start asserting power until the 1980s. By 1990, boomers were the adults ranging in age from 26 to 44 and they were the Reagan generation, 1984 was the first election in which all boomers were old enough to vote in a presidential election, they were also the last great ‘military generation’ with almost 9&1/2 million veterans.
Are you guys done with the nit-picking about who’s a boomer and who’s not yet?
Apropos to this, there is a female group called the 'Lacivious Biddies' who sing "Esther." The lyrics are hilarious and they hit it right on the head, keeping cats and such. And they sing well too.
Cuspers: old farts born between 1960 and 1965. They're neither truly boomers, nor truly gen x. barry is a cusper, which is why he's a freak.
I don’t speak girl, if you have a problem then spit it out.
We used to call it the Thanksgiving massacre when freshman at the college went home and their parents tell them about the divorce. Makes for a tough year.
The other Thanksgiving massacre is when the freshman goes home and tells the parents that he/she is attracted to the same sex.
Sometimes they massacre each other.
99% of divorces are the result of serious misconduct by the husband and/or the wife...or.....serious selfishness/shallowness by either one,or both.
I acknowledged in my post that 1946 to 1964 is the current definition of baby boomer by government agencies. I am not sure why you are questioning that I was taught something different in a previous time. Definitions and terms evolve and change over the years, which is why I included a graph in my post.
A couple of definitions for you...
“baby-boom generation - the larger than expected generation in the United States born shortly after World War II”
“generation X - the generation following the baby boom especially Americans and Canadians born in the 1960s and 1970s”
Can we agree that the key words for the baby-boom generation are “born shortly after World War II”? And the key words for generation X are born in the 1960s and 1970s? Do you consider 1964 “shortly after WWII”? Do you consider 1964 to have been in “the 1960s and 1970s”? I am curious about your statement that 18 years is “a more typical range” than 14 years... could you give me an example.
I will concede that “a more typical range” for the term generation is approximately 30 years, and 18 is closer to 30 than 14. I don't think that is what we are talking about here. If the bithrate had continued to drop after 1950 as seen in the graph, we might be describing "Baby Boomers" as being born from 1946 to 1954.
Looking4Truth, arguing with your friends is one of the foundations of this discussion forum. ; )
I don’t know what you want, boomers are well defined, the GAO, the Census Bureau, and all of the private sector and congressional discussions and planning all know the boomers are the generation of 1946 to 1964.
Generations in this context are not 30 years, they are more like 18 or 20.
I really don’t want to waste time with someone trying to bend reality into something it isn’t, for no useful reason other than to indulge himself.
That used to be the case, but the trend is moving towards ever younger men. Regardless of wealth, a woman with an older man is now the anti-status symbol. I hear that from both of my daughters, 34 and 18.
