Never once did God approve of drunkenness. Use ok, but do not abuse, that is the standard. Many denominations and religious folks go overboard and ban it altogether but that is completely unnecessary unless you are an alcoholic.

God prohibited gluttony too, but nobody condemns eating.

Agree totally. But how did they determine drunkenness, I wonder? If we use Proverbs 23:29ff as a standard, then their definition would largely be what we describe as an alcoholic.
