A man hitchhiking across the country and writing a memoir called "The Kindness of America" was injured in a random drive-by shooting along a rural highway near northeastern Montana's booming Bakken oil patch, authorities said Monday.
Ray Dolin, 39, of West Virginia, was shot in the arm as he approached a pickup Saturday evening thinking the driver was offering him a ride, said Valley County Sheriff Glen Meier.

Are you SERIOUS??? OMG!!!
You’re right except that semiauto will end up decribed as an automatic pistol by the looney left.
“Wed be much kinder if it wasnt for our guns.”
Yep. That and oil. This did happen where oil is being harvested and causing a “boon” that is nothing but negative for the Bakken area. If it weren’t for that evil oil, then the area would be able to keep up with the infrastructure needs and better monitor the citizens.
Somehow I doubt if it was "random".

Not really such a “novel” idea.
Maybe he should rename the book, “The Naivete of America.”
Or, more likely, he has a staffer monitoring FR (among other sites) for interesting material.
Probably right, Papa.
It appears he got shot when he “approached the pickup.” Article doesn’t say if he tried to open the door as a hitchhiker normally would, but if some stranger walked up to my car and attempted to open the door, he’d probably be shot if he got it open. I try to keep my range time up to date, though, and I doubt it would be an arm I hit.
Montana is slipping. In the old days he’d have been stuffed, mounted and hanging on the lodge wall by now.
Article says the vehicle pulled up to him. Anyone who does that and shoots the guy deserves to be drug behind the truck and have his gun shoved up his arse before he's shot.
If all he did was walk up, then yes I agree with you. But hitchhikers typically open the car door, and if this hitchhiker thought he was getting a ride (as the officer suggests), then he may well have done that.
Still want to stick a gun up my arse?
I stand by what I said.
So do I. I refuse to get into a fight over an AP story because the reportage is not up to FR standards.
Let’s assume you’re driving thru the middle of nowhere.
Up ahead you see a guy sitting by the side of the road. You choose to pull off next to him.
Wouldn’t you consider that an implicit invitation that you want to talk to him and that it would be reasonable for him to open the door to do so?
A totally different situation from if you were sitting in a parking lot in a city and somebody walks up to your car and opens the door.
Good for you.
I agree with you and the other poster, if that is in fact exactly the way it happened. I can’t tell because it’s an AP story, written with their usual eye for accuracy and completeness.
You’re “The Other Poster.” I had a brain failure when I needed to ping you to my last comment.
I guess we can discuss the story that was presented or we can discuss the infinite possible alternatives that the imagination can come up with.
