Folding@Home FAQ for new users:

What is Folding@Home?
A Stanford University project to find out how proteins fold.

Why it's important: Proteins folding wrong causes all kinds of diseases, like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and forms of cancer. Folding@Home uses novel computational methods and large scale distributed computing, to simulate timescales thousands to millions of times longer than previously achieved. Through Folding@home, scientists now have the horsepower to study the mechanics of protein folding. With its ability to share the workload among hundred of thousands of computers economically, Folding@home can help scientists understand how proteins snap, or don't, into their predestined shapes - and may help to explain the origins of diseases such as Alzheimer's and apparently unrelated diseases. We're fueling research that could end all that.

How does it work?: You download a safe, tested program (see link below) that is certified by Stanford University. It gets work from Stanford, runs calculations using your spare computer power, and sends the results back to the University.

Is it safe? Yes! Folding@Home rarely effects computer performance in any way and won't compromise your privacy in any way. It only uses the computing power you aren't using so it doesn't slow down other programs.

How do I get started folding for Team FreeRepublic?:
1.) Download the folding program from Stanford University's folding download page (Folding@home Client Download). Type in your desired user-name.
2.) Type in 36120 for the team number. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT - if you get the number wrong, you won't be folding for team FreeRepublic!
3.) The third question asks, "Launch automatically at machine startup, installing this as a service?" - We recommend you answer YES. Otherwise you will have to manually start the program after every reboot.

How can my computer help? Even if they were given exclusive access to all of the world's supercomputers, Stanford still wouldn't have as much processing power as they get from the supercluster of people's desktop systems Folding@home relies on. Modern supercomputers are essentially a cluster of hundreds of processors linked by fast networking. But Stanford needed the power of hundreds of thousands of processors, not just hundreds.

There's no reason to not get involved! It's free, easy, and you can know you're helping every minute without lifting a finger.

Is there a way to “resurrect” a long-dormant account? It’s been about forever and I’ve forgotten my user name. (I do remember having been on the FR team.)

I just added my AMD 1090 BE 6 core processor to the task.

My machine is now showing ALL 6 cores running at 100%

I once had 10 computers runnung the United Devices cancer research program a few years ago and I was considering rtying another Disributed processing type task.

I recently broke into the top 100 list of the group! My HP desktop running Windows 7 folds 24/7, and I just starting folding on the wife’s old laptop with Ubuntu Linux.

OK, I’m back up and running under my FR name. However, my system has changed: I’m now Win 7 (x86 version) instead of XP. I find that FAH is bogging down Firefox (so I assume it’s bogging down everything) because it’s not bogged down when I pause FAH. What setting do you think I need to diddle with?

I was under the impression that gamers had solved the folding conundrum. No?

Bonjour, y'all.

I have been folding about four years. I am currently #5 on the FR F@H list and #2226 overall folders. I went over 13,000,000 points yesterday afternoon. With continued folding I will be #2 by mid-October.

I am folding one NVIDIA GTX-470 GPU for 16-20K ppd.
I also have 13 CPU consoles spread over three computers.
I have one PS3 that just sits and folds.
My current average ppd is 22,080. It floats up and down a bit.

If you are thinking about folding, come on in. The water's fine.

Just contributed in my own way: did the C.H. Robinson MS 150 bike ride from Duluth MN to Minneapolis.

Self-ping for later when my legs recover.

Cheers!

Mine’s been pluggin away in the same config for several years, since my last big hardware change. Never actually had 6 cores on it like it says, though...it simply decided after a major power outage downed all of our machines that I was running different stuff.

Anyone who’s getting lag....stick with it. I frequently get a brief lag spike on WU uploads, particularly from one certain machine. If nothing goes awry, it never lasts more than a minute. The only issues show up if their server isn’t actually receiving the unit and mine starts to get aggressive trying to upload til it takes.

problem: My dual core completed two WUs but sent only one of them in and retrieved a new work unit. The other is sitting there at 99.99% and is doing nothing.

my set-up:
AMD Athlon x 64 dual core
FAH version 7.1.52

Do you have a suggestion or an idea where I can get help?

Need another front page call to fold! I’d do it if I could...heck I don’t think I know how to put links in a message without screwing it up really good. And you did such a great job with this one.....

I don’t know if you actively check our status, but we’ve fallen off of the top 100, Team Brony passed us! We need some new blood.
