Are you planning on getting the bolt mod kit ? It comes with Picatinnys, and allows you to mount a scope in the “normal” position. . .

Are you going to buy the bolt handle kit so you can mount a traditional scope?

Nice project. I think these rifles at current prices are a great investment and have a few.

Looking good.

I’ve read on other forums that the ATI stock almost always has to be whittled on to get a correct barrel fit.

That’s the first ATI bi-pod I’ve seen for the Mosin. Looks interesting.

Just took my daughter to the range today and several people approached me about my mosin which I converted to composite. My daughter is 13 and out of an AR15-22 a Springfield xd40 and the Mosin, the mousing was her favorite by far. Looking to add the bipod to mine in the near future.

Why not just buy somebody else’s ruined “sporter” instead of destroying another historic collectible? These abominations are all over the place. Mint condition, all-matching Mauser K98k rifles that were selling for $35 50 years ago are bringing $2,000+ today, because so many people (known as “Bubbas” in the colecting world) chopped them up to make deer rifles back when. If you want a deer rifle, why not buy a new one? It will be a better rifle than you can build, despite what some gunsmith tells you, and a lot cheaper, too.
I’ll give you credit for one thing: At least Mosin-Nagant rifles are junk to start with.

The problem with Mosins is finding one with a barrel which hasn't been shot to hell or ruined by corrosive primer ammo. I have one with a good barrel but it waits till I move to Texas for any sort of a project.

The best military rifle to make into a hunting rifle if you can find one any more is the Swiss K31. Those never saw corrosive primers or warfare and were mainly used as expensive walking stocks around the Swiss Alps, normal is for the wood to be in bad shape and the metal pristine as if never used. On the ones with the walnut stocks, the wood can be fixed. The cartridge is somewhere between 308 and 300WM and looks more like a modern cartridge and the action is terribly strong and people have converted them to magnum calibers without problems. Since the thing is a straight pull rifle, what you end up with is like a gentleman's hunting rifle at a fraction of the cost.

Matte black would be better for hunting; unless you are hunting polar bears, in which case white is recommended.

If you have a ping list for this project, please add me. I’m planning on doing something similar, but I want to built it as a scout rifle, removing barrel to get to 19 inches, no bipod.

Thanks. I’ve been considering doing something similar. Ignore the worshipers of brand names and the like (consumerism, lack of technical experience). With enough study and tinkering, it can be a good project. I have some experience in custom machining and other related studies.

Wow! Looks great. I have an 1894 Mosin. I love the fact that it was made under the last Romanov Czar.

Just a side note, If anyone has seen the 1967 Russian version of WAR AND PEACE, if you look closely some of the troops in the background are carrying Mosins while the ones nearest the camera have flintlocks.

In one scene at the battle of Bordino one Russian soldier runs across the screen with his “musket” in his left hand. You can clearly see the Mosin bolt sticking out.

Check here to make sure you aren’t sporterizing a more collectible variation. Some are worth a fair amount of $$$.

I took her out on a quick shoot this afternoon and even with the crappy bipod and still using iron sights, I was hitting 2” groups at 100 yards. Not great, but my next steps should help. My Weaver rails should be in before the first of July and I’m hoping to source a good LER scope.

The next stage is now done. I've worked on floating the barrel more (chalk and dremel does wonders). I also added UTG weaver rails in place of the rear iron sight. Based on this, you have guessed, I decided to go with a LER scope versus full bolt job and traditional scope at this time. I didn't get 'work in progress' pictures this time but here is the finished product of the rail add.

Sorry about the mess in the background, I have a lot of little projects going on.
