NME.com reports that music retailer HMV conducted the poll which asked music fans to vote on the best British album from the past 60 years. Iron Maiden’s The Number of the Beast topped the poll with almost 10% of the votes.

Depeche Mode came second with Violator, and The Beatles (four albums in the Top 10) came third with Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Iron Maiden’s Bruce Dickinson said:

We’re astonished and delighted to hear ‘The Number of the Beast’ has been named Number One. Some of the most influential and classic albums from the past 60 years were in the running so it’s a testament to our incredibly loyal and ever-supportive fans who voted for us.

Iron Maiden is a proudly British band, so to win this category as voted for by the British public, in Jubilee year, is very special. Thank you to all our wonderful fans! …

Heavy Metal Ping!!!

It is one wicked album. The guitar work on it is amazing with a ton of catchy hooks and riffs.

Love maiden, but I think powerslave and killers are better.

If you haven’t, check out “Brave New World” from about 2000. Very underrated album in their catalog. Easily up there with Killers IMO.

Yes! YES! Up the Irons!!

As a long-time Iron Maiden fan, it’s wonderful to see Iron Maiden getting their full due as the music force they are.

For me, personally, I find “Piece of Mind” and “Powerslave” to be the best Iron Maiden albums to date, but “Number of the Beast” certainly ranks as one of the greatest albums of all time nonetheless.

Oasis’ Morning Glory is top of my list.

The Stone Roses debut needs to be there as well.

The ‘White Album’ is a Rorschach test meant to test someone’s hipster credentials. It’s actually an overlong, disjointed effort with an appalling quotient of dross. To paraphrase Mark Twain, everybody praises it but few listen to it.

Top to bottom I think NOTB is the best album. killers and Brave New World are my two favorite songs.

Being a huge Maiden fan, I finally saw them in concert last year in Tampa, where they hadn’t played since 1991.

For me it’s a tossup between ‘Twilight Zone’ with DiAnno and ‘Thin line between love and hate’ with Bruce for songs. I was always more of a ‘deep cuts’ guy ;)

Albumwise, That’s tough. Dunno if I could honestly pick one. BNW, Powerslave/Live after Death, Killers and the original Iron Maiden are about tied. The nice thing about being an IM fan is never having to utter the words ‘that song/album sucks’. ;) Even Blaze Baily had some good stuff.

Agree 1,000%. Best metal band, ever. I’m going to see them again on June 26th. It’ll be my son’s first time seeing them.

After Dark Side, the gap to whatever is in 2d place is simply enormous.

Dark Side isn’t merely the Absolute Best ‘British’ Rock Album of all time, it is T.H.E. Absolute Best Rock Album of all time, period.

Concept, execution, ‘completeness’ — when they locked up those tracks, there wasn’t ANYTHING left on the table undone.

Wouldn’t argue with Maiden, the Beatles or Floyd. Never even heard of Adele. Depeche Mode and Oasis? Come on.

The big one missing for me from that list would be Black Sabbath, at least one of the first six albums would need to be represented in my top 10 somewhere.
