FYI..the general consenus is that in medievil times, there was a rank of seargent-major general, which was of course subordinate to lieutenant general..SMG was way too unwieldy..heck..by the time that an aide ran up to an SMG to report, and just started to say the rank..."Seargent-Major General, sir.."..the enemy could well have broken through the lines...
So, it was shortened to Maj.Gen, but tis still beneath Lt. Gen in the chain of command..
