Our local Comcast now interrupts programming for a severe weather alert. They not only interrupt what you are watching, they change the channel AND disable your remote control so that you can't switch to anything else.
This has happened three times this week. My husband and I were watching one show, when a beeping sound let us know that a weather alert had been issued. A "severe thunderstorm alert" began to scrawl at the top of the page. THEN, the tv channel changed to WGN, without either of us touching anything. All of a sudden, instead of watching Jeopardy, we were watching America's Funniest Home Videos (which isn't funny!) on WGN. The sound on WGN was totally muted, except for the emergency broadcast. It beeped and scrolled for a couple of minutes, then a lady came on and read the alert to us. You still could not hear the tv program. It stayed that way for about four minutes. We kept trying to change back to Jeopardy, but could not do anything with our remote except adjust the volume. By the way, the alert was for a severe thunderstorm located three counties away, 86 miles from us. There was absolutely no danger to our area!
There is another strange part of this. Those alerts used to say "The National Weather Service has issued a warning .......". Now it says, "An EAS Participant has spotted a severe thunderstorm ......". What the heck is that about? I certainly felt more "concerned" when an alert was issued by the NWS! This is all part of the Obama/FEMA - designed alert system that went into affect this year. I guess a severe thunderstorm three counties away is worthy of the emergency broadcast system. We live in Florida. Can you imagine how many times our tv channeling will be interrupted each day, each month?
So, you don't watch tv! Whoopee!
To those of us who "still watch television", these alerts are a pain!
If you don't mind, I am pointing out the intrusion of the interruption. This is not a commentary on whether or not some smart#* watches television or not!
We pay way too much, for sure. But, that is another story. This is not about Comcast, it is about the emergency alert agency - it is about the uninvited and unnecessary intrusion.
We have a weather alert radio. If severe weather is headed our way, we will know it. We also get alerts on every tv channel, so why is it necessary to change over to a specific channel and totally incapacitate my tv and remote?
Winston, you are committing a thought crime here. Obamatelevision knows and is on their way. Did you also foul up on the Party’s ten minutes of hate Mr. Zimmerman? You probably did. :(
ditto
I have DirectTV and, to date, I haven’t had that problem. I’m sure it will happen at some point in time. But I do have Netflix streaming, and I love having an alternative way to watch TV. I cut back my DirectTV package to a lower priced one and I haven’t missed any of the channels I no longer receive.
Call and complain.
Jeopardy viewers have a LOT of clout!
Just saying, if people quit buying their product, they’d mend their ways.
Same with the airlines and those lice they keep around — the TSA.
