NEARLY 20 people were badly injured when a pack of hyenas raided Kilimamoja village in Karatu district, Arusha region and started attacking people.
The Village Chairman, Mr Israeli Lulu and the local police confirmed the incident, adding that it has not yet been established where the wild animals came from before wreaking havoc in the area. The hyena attacks, according to Mr Lulu, was first reported last Friday night and continued over the weekend despite the villagers dispatching a team of men to hunt down the beasts.
The in-charge of the Karatu District Hospital, Dr Daniel Simpa said he received nearly 20 victims of the attacks, with three of them being in critical condition and had to be referred to the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC) in Moshi.
Dr Simpa added that eight other victims were still being admitted at the Karatu hospital and seven have just been discharged after treatment.
The victims who are still admitted to the hospital include Mr Emanuel Qmara (50), Mr Elisante Shangwe (56), Mr Elia Hariweri (50), Mr Sofari Roho (27), Mr Paulo Florian (25), Mr Emanual Paulo, Ms Filomena Richard (58) and Ms Anna John (60).
There have been mixed reports regarding the hyenas' attack with some people claiming to be just one single, large beast while others swearing it was a pack of them, but so far the authorities in Karatu have confirmed that a total of 17 people have been hurt from the weekend ordeal.
The first victim was a lady, Ms Filomena Richard whose house is located adjacent to a deep gorge from which one of the beasts is reported to have emerged from. The hyena reportedly took a bite from Ms Richard's arm before running away when the lady started to scream for help.
When villagers gathered around the house, it was already dark and as they discussed how to start hunting down the animal, there was another attack right within the group as the hyena or a similar beast jumped onto one of the villagers.
After that, the hyena(s) continued to launch attacks to unsuspecting villagers at different times of the night, leaving a trail of nearly 20 victims in the scary weekend night. So far the villagers have managed to kill one of the beasts; beaten by a mob of local residents when it was in the process of attacking one of the village officials, Mr Felician Panga who is among the wounded victims.
Hyena Busters...!
Just think....this was one 870P shotgun away from being a non-story.
This is no laughing matter...
Doesn’t look like the same guy in both photos but they’re dressed exactly alike. Gang colors or a uniform of some sort?
Hey, the hyenas are doing the same thing to this country! Where’s the news in that?
Same guy. Here’s some background: http://www.coolhunting.com/culture/pieter-hugo.php
Obama chow...
The site of these attacks is near Arusha good sized city with a big airport. People come in for safari's and to climb Mount. Kiliminjaro.
Some of those at that link look like they’re a cross-breed of hyena and Rhodesian Ridgeback.
It certainly doesn’t make me an expert but I’ve seen hyenas...up close...in the wild. They looked to me like particularly unfriendly suckers even at rest (which is how I saw them).
"After that, the hyena(s) Werewolf continued to launch attacks to unsuspecting villagers at different times of the night, leaving a trail of nearly 20 victims in the scary weekend night. So far the villagers have managed to kill one of the beasts; beaten by a mob of local residents when it was in the process of attacking one of the village officials, Mr Felician Panga who is among the wounded victims."
Or a cheezy Sci-Fi made for TV movie:
"After that, the hyena(s) Chucacabra continued to launch attacks to unsuspecting villagers at different times of the night, leaving a trail of nearly 20 victims in the scary weekend night. So far the villagers have managed to kill one of the beasts; beaten by a mob of local residents when it was in the process of attacking one of the village officials, Mr Felician Panga who is among the wounded victims."
"After that, the hyena(s) gang member(s) continued to launch attacks to unsuspecting villagers at different times of the night, leaving a trail of nearly 20 victims in the scary weekend night. So far the villagers have managed to kill one of the beasts; beaten by a mob of local residents when it was in the process of attacking one of the village officials, Mr Felician Panga who is among the wounded victims."
It does sound a little like the plot from Tarzan and the Leopard Women.
Glad she’s all right. Might be a good idea if she stayed out of third world areas altogether, including those in the US.
Thanks.
(I was just making stupid observation.)
But your post encouraged me to Google it:
“Hyenas are not members of the canid (dog) or felid (cat) families. Instead, they are so unique that they have a family all their own, Hyaenidae. There are four members of the Hyaenidae family: the striped hyena Hyaena hyaena, the giggly spotted hyena Crocuta crocuta, the brown hyena Parahyaena brunnea, and the aardwolf Proteles cristatus (its a hyena, not a wolf).”
I just worry and make sure they have good travel insurance with emergency evacuation riders.
