BLOOMINGTON - A man arrested for shooting at police officers while naked last week has been charged with attempted murder.
Corey Hamersley was taken into custody Friday after he was seen shooting into the back door of a residence near the Indiana University campus, then turning the weapon on police after being ordered to drop the gun. He shot at officers twice before being shot two times by another officer. He sustained injuries to both legs and was transported to IU Health Bloomington Hospital.
Hamersley was naked during the incident.
"He indicated that he thought about how cool it would be to say he shot a cop," Bloomington Police Capt. Joe Qualters wrote in a release.
Qualters says Hamersley acknowledged pointing a loaded weapon at the officer, trying to shoot him in the chest. A search of the suspect's residence turned up various drugs and drug paraphernalia.
After he was released from the hospital, Hamersley was booked into jail and preliminarily charged with attempted murder, criminal recklessness, pointing a firearm, possession of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana, all felony charges.
Formal charges will be determined by the Monroe County Prosecutor's Office at a later date.
