I bribe our squirrels with old crackers or bread so they'll stop trying to steal birdseed from our “squirrel-proof” bird feeder. I lay them out on the deck rail right outside the breakfast room window and they'll sit there and eat the crackers holding them with both hands (paws) turning them around as they nibble away. Our cat, Beaux, loves to watch them through the shutters and he “chirps” at them as they run around. We also keep large flat plastic dishes on plant stands filled with clean, every day changed, water and they as well as the birds love to drink and/or bath in it. Quite a neat show while having the morning coffee.

That's a pretty good description for that weird noise cats start to make when they see critters outside!
