At 7 this morning I was hiking in the woods about 1/2 mile away, enjoying the mist, silence and solitude-until I heard a screech that chilled my blood. No, not a mountain lion-a peacock-and when I stepped out of the forest to have a look, there he was, proud and loud, perched on the windmill belonging to a neighbor up the hill.

That neighbor recently put a higher fence around their yard, and now I know why-they had a few peafowl until about a year ago, and most of us had almost gotten used to the nocturnal screeching, when some enterprising varmints got over the fence and dragged them off one by one. The quiet was nice, but with the raising of the fence and the restocking of the birds, I suppose I’d better get used to “raaaghaaaaaa” shattering the night and early morning hours once more...

Oh they are LOUD! We used to like taking the kids to the quad at Ft. Sam to see them and the deer.

When MrT5 was stationed at Ft. Sam, all personnel available were required to attend the 4th of July concert. We used to go early to stroll around the quad and interact with the animals while he sweated in uniform. Besides deer and peafowl, they had some rabbits and gamecocks running around, too. I’ve missed experiencing the 1812 in person with real cannon and fireworks right beside you since moving out here-nothing compares.
