Time Magazine's Breastfeeding Cover: Moms React
Yahoo ^ | 5/10/2012 | Lylah M. Alphonse, Senior Editor, Yahoo! Shine | Parenting

Does this cover go too far? (Photo: Time.com)The headline reads, "Are You Mom enough?" But if that wasn't enough to fan the flames of the Mommy Wars, there's the photo that goes with it: A pretty young woman wearing skinny jeans and a tank top, nursing her nearly 4-year-old son. It's meant to illustrate a story about Dr. William Sears and attachment parenting but, given that there's more to that movement than extended breastfeeding, it seems as if Time magazine was going for sensationalism and shock value.

It's working.

I had two friends, one who breast fed her son until 5 at naptime. My own son was disturbed that his bud was doing that.

The other was a mom who just couldnt wean her kid. Finally one day she looked down and he was noshing on a sandwitch and taking sips and she said enough is enough.

I think it was about the closeness and comfort in both cases. Both are wonderful women in so many other ways.

Both were elderly moms, in their 40s too.

I had an elderly uncle who grew up in Austria. He told of a schoolmate who waited until his mother could come to class each day so he could eat... and drink milk. He was eleven years old. This was well before WWII.

I had to stop my son nursing at one year because he was biting like a Rottweiler.

It has to do w/ the whole “attachment parenting” ........................

The "attachment parenting" thing I remember was the parents hand quickly and with a sound rap on the child's bottom.

Chewy and Screwy?

I didn't breastfeed my children, and there was no child abuse because I didn't.

For one thing, many people in this country don't eat proper diets themselves. I told my doctor straight up that I ate my veggies and nutritious food, but liked to snack occasionally and didn't always eat salad, lean meat, etc. Occasionally I ate fast food. I preferred to bottle feed because I researched each ingredient in the formula I chose and knew it was healthier then what I was eating, although I am in shape and look healthy from the outside (or so I'm told).

Both daughter's have thrived and are at the top of their class, athletically and academically. About the same time I had my first, so did a friend, who's baby was colicky and cried all the time. This woman hounded me to death because I didn't breastfeed, and flipped out when I suggested the baby may me ingesting something they don't like from her breast milk. At her wits end, she mentioned this to her doctor and he cut out of her diet spicy and gassy foods and the baby calmed right down. Soon she went to formula and all was well. I'm not saying people shouldn't breastfeed, just be aware of what YOU are eating and drinking. That poor baby cried for months because of what her mother ate! Oh, and 3 is to darn old!

Tom Lehrer had some advice for this sitution:

There once lived a man named oedipus rex. You may have heard about his odd complex. His name appears in freud's index 'cause he loved his mother.

His rivals used to say quite a bit, That as a monarch he was most unfit. But still in all they had to admit That he loved his mother.

Yes he loved his mother like no other. His daughter was his sister and his son was his brother. One thing on which you can depend is, He sure knew who a boy's best friend is!

When he found what he had done, He tore his eyes out one by one. A tragic end to a loyal son Who loved his mother.

So be sweet and kind to mother, Now and then have a chat. Buy her candy or some flowers or a brand new hat. But maybe you had better let it go at that!

If it was the only thing it was used for, I would agree. But like almost every other part of the body it has multiple uses and with other sexual parts of the body we cover them up.

“Americans are such prudes when it comes to breast feeding.”

I am the least prudish person about it. They were put there to feed babies. However I just don’t get why Time is doing this article and splashed it on the front of the magazine. Do they really want to encourage this behavior in more American women? If so what is the purpose of this?

The cover on Time was stupid. They could certainly have discussed the topic of breastfeeding (older children included) without the suggestive photo. The topic didn’t need a shock value.

I wasn’t replying to posters about the photo itself, I was talking about the disgust people seemed to show because a child of three was being breast fed. Two different topics.

Gosh, you think? Trying to sell magazines at the cover price to people who would otherwise never think of picking up Time?

Hint to boys with no other options: you can get the "Motherwear" catalog for free!

That cover reminds me of the ‘Malcolm in the Middle’ episode where Dewey (the youngest brother) ends up sleeping with the babysitter. The camera pans to his face as he snuggles into the bed and he’s got this sly grin.

Yeah that’s why.

No, it’s why we wear clothing in the first place.

Oboy. :)
