Man catches fish with duck beak from Hau River[Vietnam]

Nguyen Thanh Nhan in Binh Minh district, the Mekong Delta province of Vinh Long last Friday caught a 2 kilo fish that has a jaw looking like a duck beak.

According to Nhan, he was sitting on a boat on Hau River when he saw two strange fish rising up from the water.

He used a net to catch one.

Hearing about Nhan with the strange fish, locals throng his house to watch but no one could tell what kind of fish it is.

Although having a body of a fresh water fish, it has a head looking like an alligator and its skin is like that of a snake.

Currently, Nhan has sent the fish to an eatery with the intention of selling it to anyone who can give him the best price.

According to marine experts at Can Tho University, this is probably a duck beak fish coming from overseas. It is said to be fierce and harmful to humans.

More sensationalistic journalism. It is a gar. Any research at all would tell you what this fish is. By the way, they are not too bad eating, but the skin is like iron. My father-in-law butchers them in pieces with an axe. Then make a circle just inside the skin to skin it. He mowed a piece of the skin all summer one year and did not destroy it.

I agree that it's a gar, but gar are not known to be native to Asia. Either it's an introduced specimen, or somebody just discovered a new species in the genus Lepisosteidae.

Got some pictures of my father when he was 16 down on the Mississippi and they have their 12 foot alligator gars strung up on a tall rack.

They are HUGE.

I said gars, right? They had about a dozen of them. Then they gave a bunch of them to some locals who cooked 'em right there ~ along with big homemade tamales.
