When did the umps start NOT to require the 2nd baseman to touch the bag on a double play?

I have noticed this for a LONG time, but I have never asked about it, nor have I ever seen it discussed.

I am watching my Mets against Houston, and the Astros have a man on first. Sharp grounder to third, and Wright backhands it and throws to Murphy at second, and Murphy is AT LEAST 1.5 feet off the bag when he catches it, wheels and throws to first; BUT the ump calls the Astro OUT at second.

When did this start??

I throw it sidearm to lower the throw to first. The runner has to get down or take the throw in the chest or the head.

Thanks, that was a puzzler for me.

Baltimore is doing great this year-——a heck of a lot better than our Red Sox.God,what a mess.

Even though I have never been to Camden Yards I think it is one of the nicest ballparks in baseball.Just the look of it makes me feel good.My sons and son-in-law who have been there say it is terrific.

I have been to Camden Yards once - in the inaugural year. It is a really great park and, although I like the fact that it is downtown, I miss Memorial Stadium.

When I lived in Lynchburg, Virginia in the 70’s, I used to rent out rooms in my house so I could to afford to drive up to Baltimore for weekend games. Games with Boston were the best - they have great fans in the Baltimore area. Most of the time I sat up in the upperdeck with Wild Bill’s group (lots of fun times and great stories). When Boston was in town, I sat in the middle of their section with my Palmer shirt on. Never had to buy my own beer sitting with the Boston fans.

One thing about Memorial Stadium - it was the only place where National Bo beer was any good, because it was served up really cold.

What nice things you said about Red Sox fans.Thanks.

Now Yankees fans are something else.:-)

Have a great baseball season and just beat the damn Yankees(and Rays)for us-——The Sox certainly won’t be doing it.

(And now I even know what a submarine throw is.)

Ciao!

What is wrong with you?

Millions of people enjoy baseball.

If you don't like it why log on to a baseball thread?

Because people with no lives that live vicariously the lives of those professional sports “warriors” they cherish expect ME, my WIFE, and my kids, my friends, NONE of whom have a minute for professional sports trash, to pay for their STADIUMS with my taxes so they can watch their “warrior” heroes...

That’s why.

You want to watch drugged up adults that learned to play children’s games for millions? Then pay for your own toy box for them to entertain you in.

Rog on the Yankees. I remember when Reggie Jackson left Baltimore for the Yankees. They outlawed bottled beer in the upper deck because they thought someone would throw one at him when he came to town. Free agency killed baseball. It allowed teams like the Yanks to go out and buy the Yankee killers. I was PO’d when Mussina left Baltimore. I liked the days when a player stayed with one team his entire career. I don’t care for the designated hitter either.

So, by your logic President George W Bush is a person who has no life.

LOL!

“I don’t care for the designated hitter either.”

— I grew up with the mantra “Pitchers can’t hit” and The Boston Braves. Those were the days,my FRiend.
