“The gun.”
Those two simple words flowed easily from the mouth of social commentator Bill Cosby during an exclusive interview Friday regarding the Trayvon Martin case, arguably the most high-profile, citizen-on-citizen U.S. slaying facing the Obama administration.
Trayvon was killed Feb. 26 in Sanford, Fla., by neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman, who told police that a “confrontation” with the unarmed 17-year-old led him to shoot in self-defense.
Mr. Cosby, a Navy veteran, said “the gun” empowered Mr. Zimmerman, whose actions have stirred a firestorm of debate, protests and remarks from President Obama.
“We’ve got to get the gun out of the hands of people who are supposed to be on neighborhood watch,” said Mr. Cosby, whose remarks were the first he has made publicly about the case.
“Without a gun, I don’t see Mr. Zimmerman approaching Trayvon by himself,” Mr. Cosby explained. “The power-of-the-gun mentality had him unafraid to confront someone. Even police call for backup in similar situations.
“When you carry a gun, you mean to harm somebody, kill somebody,” he said.

I wonder what position Cosby would take on the 78 year old white man that was beaten by a group of 11-17 year old kids some black and some white, that said, “This is for Trayvon”? Even if the 78 year old man shot one of the kids, which he didn’t would he still be anti gun?

So, a person responsible for policing the neighbor hood and with the all to real possibility of running into violent thugs(which Zimmerman did)shouldn't be armed? Since when do you get to tell people whether they can be armed or not? Oh, that's right, you don't get to tell them.
Zimmerman would most likely be dead right now or a brain dead vegetable if he had not been armed, or are you forgetting the part about Zimmerman being the one who was attacked by TM, not the other way around?
There’s not enough information in this snippet to draw conclusions. I didn’t read that Bill Cosby was advocating gun control.
It’s possible that the situation may have ended better if Zimmerman didn’t feel empowered by his gun and had called for backup. Any good ccw instructor will tell you to avoid dangerous situations, even (or especially) when carrying. Perhaps Zimmerman wasn’t trained properly.
However, I do wonder if Mr. Cosby’s personal security is armed.
Mr. Cosby was at a convenience store frequented by my husband about a year ago. Hubby recognized him right away, but didn’t say anything. Hubby then went outside and was headed across the street when Mr. Cosby started talking to him about basketball. He was alone. He was on his way to a March Madness game all by himself. He looked like a nobody. I doubt he carried a weapon since he was headed to a weapons free zone. Hubby says no one else even recognized him.
Thanks for the info. I have always respected Mr. Cosby and the way he has helped the black community. His tough rhetoric reminds me of Thomas Sowell’s logic.

So true. It's a disease. And its such a shame here - he's done so much, and now he's thrown it all away and played right into Obama's race-baiting hands.
I have carried a gun everyday for 4 years now and have never killed anyone.....what can one say about these types of comments except they are patently idiotic.
Mainly automatics and semi-autos and pump action shotguns. You basically can only own a pisol and a single ation rife or shotgun.

Fairly accurate statements allround. Other than for hunting purposes I have never felt the need to own a gun in this country.
‘The times they are a changin’ as the old song goes. Still the amount of illegal guns in Aus is reasonably low - I suppose that is one of the good things about being an island continent - it’s not so easy to smuggle them across a border.

I heard these figures at the time but would hazard a guess they are wildly inflated. Still I know a few farmers and they assure me that many they knew would find a way to hold onto a few guns for vermin shooting purposes.
What we do hear about more nowadays are semi-automatic hand guns being used by bikie gangs to shoot at each other. These are either 1) Guns that were secreted during the buy back scheme or 2) Smuggled guns. I think the later may be more true as these guys have connections everywhere. In reality we do not have a lot of gun crime and that which we do have is pasted all over the newspapers.
Of course if you’re a thug it’s easy to replace a gun with a knife, machette or baseball bat and commit the same crimes.

Mr Cosby, why do we need neighborhood watch in the first place? Who watches your place? Neighborhood watch are our bodyguards. Guns? Who commits the crimes with guns? Neighborhood watch? The stats show gun crimes are mostly gang related. If you live in Florida, you will see that many homes are seasonal and seasonal homes are easy break ins. Unfortunately some of theses seasonal homes may appear empty but are not. Whoa be to anyone who may break into one of those homes. Cops call for backup, but so did Zimmerman with a 911 call before the shots were fired. Lets see what the Polygraph showed before we condemn an armed citizen.
He was just trying to get “the jello pudding pops” when he was gunned-down by an histerical, white-hispanic-—what ever that is means-—racist who’s the news peeps couldn’t even remotely get right(firing of sacrificial liberal non-reporting propogandist who got caught.) I never, for one minute believed the Chucks’unstable familie’s PC BS for one minute , never met a person of color anywhere who remotely resembled that family, although they are out there-— even the Obama family has it’s demons. His family’s history (O, that is) are as disfunctional as any disfunctional family could possible be——it’s his own history(every family has their crazy uncle; Obama’s happens to be Bill Ayers) not quite the terrorist I’d prefer to hand-out with.) Most of the Blacks I was unfortunate enough to meet were the vile in their manner and quite racist toward anyone of non-color-—in their eyes anyway. Except that color being yellow, those people are the ‘New Verbotten Jew” according to Marion Barry and his district of losers who will encite violence agaisnt them by a miscreant, drud-using-whore-lapping-representitive of even more vile constituents.

having a bad experience with a bad person doing bad things with a gun and thereby hating all guns makes as much sense
as having a bad experiece with a person of another race and thereby hating all people of that race.
