My apologies as I ,too, earned a BA in English.

I read books like “Eats Shoots and Leaves” and cannot supress the urge to poke when I see such examples. My mother made sure that I knew correct usages, but always took the time to highlight incorrect or poor linguistics as if to say, “There it is...Don’t step in it!”.

Be aware, however, that I am also teaching my children correctly so that when the grading competition begins, the winner will be clear.

We started in the cradle with our three children and never used baby talk. From the start our daughters learned the importance of the agreement of case, number, tense and gender. We played Scrabble and other word games, did crossword puzzles and, as the kids observed independently, their parents always seemed to be reading a book. My live in mother-in-law, a retired high school French teacher, read to the kids in English and French when the kids were too young for school; they arrived well prepared.

One can raise literate children but not by relying on the schools
