Hitachi Global Storage Technologies today announced its first enterprise-class 4TB desktop hard drive, which offers one-third more capacity than its predecessor.
Computerworld Hitachi's former disk-drive division today announced what it said it the first enterprise-class 4TB hard disk drive.
The drive has a greater areal density that offers 33% more capacity in the same 3.5-inch form factor at 24% lower watts-per-gigabyte than its predecessor.
Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (HGST), now owned by Western Digital , introduced the new Ultrastar 7K4000 line, which uses the new 512e Advanced Format.
The industry as a whole is moving to the Advanced Format standard because 4KB sectors on hard drives offer higher capacities and addresses current technological limitations with 512-byte sectors in some OSes, such as Windows XP. Laptop drives, or 2.5-in hard drives, adopted the 512e Advanced Format in 2010.
Advanced Format HDDs, also known as 512e HDDs, will emulate 512-byte SATA, allowing them to maintain backward compatibility.

BIG DEAL! Lets hope it is better than the lemon of a 50” rear projection Hitachi TV that I purchased. The picture developed a large red glow in the middle of the picture.. I found out on the internet that lots of other consumers had developed the condition with the same set and were complaining about it. The problem was a defective color engine that caused the part to overheat. The color engine is what makes the set work and is the most important part. When I contacted Hitachi they denied there was a problem even though they knew it and were very nasty about my inquiry. Told me not to believe what I read on the internet even though lots of Hitachi set owners were describing the exact problem I was experiencing My 4 year service plan with Sears was just over so I thought Hitachi would admit to knowing the part was defective and offer to stand by their product and correct the problem. All I got was the brush off. I will NEVER EVER buy a Hitachi product and will encourage anybody else I can to do likewise.

If you're buying enterprise class drives and not using some form of RAID for data protection, you're doing it very, very wrong.
I’ve been wondering why we don’t go to this for a while. The Windows world has been using 4K clusters by default for years. HFS+ (Mac) uses 4K blocks for many parts of the file system, and the typical allocation block size is 4K+. IIRC, ext3-4 uses 4K and up block sizes.
It’s about time we stop playing around with 512b hard drive sectors, and allow a direct file system block to HDD sector mapping for most uses.
