It seems a box office phenomenon is happening right now.
"The Hunger Games", from previews, seems to be setting all sorts of records this weekend.
Very captivating camera work, and a sort of 'blade runner' sort of theme it would seem.
Hadn’t heard of this story. Thanks.
My 14-year old daughter has a good eye, and thought the shaky camera was to show the difference between District 12 and the nice Capitol district - where the camera was in focus and not shaky from then on out. Sort of like in the Wizard of Oz.
As a 51-year old guy that hadn’t read the book, I really enjoyed the movie.
The left hijacked it of course.
It’s more of “The Running Man” novel by Stephen King. Not the movie adaption with Ahnold.
Frankly I am tired of movies where waif girls beat all the larger boys and men. That’s not how it woudl really go down and I cannot suspend disbelief enough to stomach it.
It is violent, but I don’t think it is any worse than what you might see on a T.V. show. However, there was a boy sitting next to us that was 9 or 10 and my wife exclaimed that he was too young. After the death of a special character he and his death left. Although the death was not too graphic or violent, combined with good character development it left me with a tear in my eye.
That’s not a real trailer. It is a fan production, but pretty good for conveying the mood of the contest.
Didnt Schlinders list have the shaky camera at times to show the intensity of the situation? When the capitol police were lining up the children for the reaping was when i noticed the shakiness. Hard scenes to watch as a parent.
Right, the po' folks send their kids to the meatgrinder while the chickenhawks get fatter. The Iraq war, er, I mean the hunger games, are just entertainment for the wealthy.
Theres also an economic-oppression angle: Poor citizens can barter for food and other necessities by increasing the number of times their names go into the pool for the lottery. Thus, the rich are sheltered, and the poor are disproportionately at risk.
Ah, of course, an "economic oppression" angle!
And I notice that Woody Harrelson and Lenny Kravitz are listed as producers. Who here thinks these guys would put their names on something with a real conservative message?
I can see this thing from a mile away. It is indeed leftist agitprop. Conservatives who see a conservative message in this film are being punked just like the ones who thought Avatar was about respecting property rights.
Provided the budget can support, look for an IMAX showing nearby. It is a little more expensive, but that may cut the crowd when running side by side with regular prints. Also, go on line and use a ticketing service (like Fandango) for that location, if possible, and book your tickets in advance.
That is great advice. Thank you. I will try that. I especially like the IMAX idea. I am not sure why I didn’t think of it. Most likely because it is about 45 minutes from me, but that would be worth the trip.
I decided to take my 18 year old son out to see it as a surprised, after I bought the tickets and was in a terribly long line inside the theater he then tells me he saw it yesterday on a school class field trip.
So I returned the tickets for a refund.
It was a multiplex theater house and even with multiple showings it was sold out every single show.
I’ll wait for it to come out on Blueray, funny thing is when the overhyped Girl with the Dragon Tatto came out I passed up on it, picked up the BD movie and I must say it was actually extremely good!
I’ve never heard of the book and am very skeptical about anything coming out from Hollywood. Just watched the movie with my wife and highly recommend it, powerful and disturbing, in my opinion...
I think a lot of the shaky camera was to blur the fact that children are being murdered, especially at the Cornucopia at the beginning.
I hate violent movies so I doubt I’ll see this one.
I'd like to see a listing of her recent political donations.
More like a Battle Royale thing.
Sex in movies does not influence the culture.
Product placement in movies does not influence the culture.
Liberal propaganda in movies does not affect the culture.
Profanity in movies does not affect the culture.
Song placement in movies does not affect the culture.
But smoking and fake gun violence affects the culture negatively.
Odd how that works.
Oh - you are right - they do have it very close, shakey and lots of motion so that you get the idea of the chaos of the battle, but no details.
My 12-year-old son and I saw it today. We both thought it was excellent. Here’s my synopsis: two kids from the flyover beat the spiritually and morally bankrupt cosmopolitan elites at their own game, and strike a blow for freedom.
My son and I had a good discussion over pizza afterward. We talked about freedom, decency, courage, and human dignity, and how the various characters represented, or failed to represent, those things.
There is no sexual content. The romance between the hero and heroine is distinctly old-fashioned. He had loved her from afar since they were children, and was prepared to sacrifice himself for her.
She wasn’t too fit for her character.
Her character should have been an athletic outdoorsy girl.
She has a big butt and thighs that they spent the whole show hiding.
She looks like she is a “jogger trying to cut weight” not a runner on semi-starvation diet.
She did a decent job of it - but she looked like her character would look - after 2 kids.
After the movie - I though it was OK - they had to make it for mass market. But I would LOVE to see an X rated movie version - that let it get as dark as the thinking behind it is. Would be a masterpiece.
Also - the film editing - ever shot was like 5 seconds long. And close cropped.
