Looking for another rifle
Vanity | 03/22/2012 | Peter from Rutland

Posted on 03/22/2012 8:55:06 PM PDT by Peter from Rutland

I'm looking for another rifle. I want this one for if the fecal matter hits the oscillating unit, you know basic target shooting at the club, *cough*. Should be high caliber but not ridiculous. I don't want to spend ridiculous dollars for something that looks great but is inferior. It must be semi-auto, not one shot. I can't think of a better place to ask for opinions. Makers, calibers and model suggestions welcome.

Read ‘Boston’s Gun Bible’ before you buy anything else.

If you can, try looking into the SKS. You can pick one up cheap. Make sure that they are Sov/Block made. Same for an AKS 47. They will get the job done in the short and medium range targets. I bought a SKS some years back and over the years have been modifying it with composite stock, rails,
scopes, etc. The gun handles well and tons of cheap ammo.

For the budget minded, the Doublestar Star 15 CAR 16" HBAR .223 is an affordable choice. It's a nice AR-15 knock off in semi-auto and I can attest to its accuracy. Bud's Gun Shop has them right now for $659.00.

Springfield Armory M1A .308. I ran thousands of rounds of surplus from Argentina, So. Africa, Hungary, Russia and all kinds of ammo through it before I cleaned it.

Zero malfunctions and accurate. 1-1.5 @ 100yrds depending on how much I concentrated.

Luv it and my SHTF goto weapon.

Fast on target, easy to clean and if I ever ran out of ammo is so heavy I can easily KO an opponent with one swing.

Surplus ammo can be had for .40-50 cents per round and will easily reach out to touch someone @ 800-1000 yrds.

Favorite cordless long distance drill.

Something like this?

EDM Arms Semi-Auto Model 05: The most accurate semi-auto 50 cal on the market today. EDM Arms guarantees 1 & 1/2 MOA at 1000 yards with match ammunition.

Remington 700 or 770 in .308 or 30-06 married with a Leupold Mark IV will enable you to whack anything @ 600-800 yrds.

Still expensive but and more scope than gun but, if you want to keep bad people at bay and ducking.....

get something that accepts AR15 magazines and something that accepts AK47 magazines and you’ll have your bases covered. Make your AR15 type rifle one of the new AR15s that does away with the old direct gas impingement system and all your friends will be jealous even if it is 5.56 mm. If you must have a 7.62 mm, you should get a SCAR 17. You would be hard pressed to find a better big bore battle rifle at this time. I have a modified Armalite AR10T incidentally, worth about $3,500. I would trade it in for a SCAR 17 in a heartbeat.

I like the .308 more than a .223, so it’s an AR10 or a M1A. I have the M1A and love it. The second choice would be an AK variant of some sort for the ammo. I like .30 cal bullets. If you just had to, I guess as a 3rd choice I might settle for a AR15 or a Ruger mini 14. I have the mini .30 and a mini 14. I like the mini .30 more. I also have 2 Mak90’s. Have a large drum for one so, well,....I can last a long time without reloading. I will lose them tomorrow in a boating accident. I want to be buried with my M1A so I may jump overboard.

This is the .308 I have. It is not semi-automatic, but it can be used by left-handers or right-handers. The 4 bullet clip makes it real easy to reload different type round combinations and is capable of handling ballistically superior pointed bullets. This combination gives the accuracy of a bolt action with the fast chambering that a lever action provides. The .308 is fast, accurate without the recoil and a very affordable available ammunition.

The Browning BLR .308 Lever action

See my post #59. The .308 is the way to go. Easy on the pocket book too.
