Another Hillerman fan! That's where I got my FR name from. In several Hillerman novels he mentions the "season when thunder sleeps."
I've travelled some (not as much as I'd like) through Hillerman country and the Navajo reservation. I've seen Shiprock, even camped/hiked in Chaco ("Thief of Time") and seen the government housing referenced in the novel.
Going back to the SW, on the fringes of Hillerman country this summer for two weeks of camping/hiking. It is nearly obscene how much I'm looking forward to it - already started making gear/packing/menu lists etc. even though the trip is almost 3 months away.

I spend two years working the Four Corners, on the Navajo, Southern Ute and Apache reservations. I took the books and in my off time went to many of the out of the way places mentioned.
Once we were stuck on location waiting on a truck to move our trailer, the first night the Navajo cops stopped to check on us. Asked did we have weapons and when we said, yes. They told us to answer the door armed.
I just finished the latest Charlie Moon and LMAO.

I’d love to go out to New Mexico and see the Navajo Reservation and Shiprock, and other places mentioned in the books!

Mark me down as another Hillerman fan that envies your plan and wants to emulate it. I feel lost without a new Hillerman to read.
