Sigh...to make a long story short, my wife has decided that she's getting out of Texas, with or without me.
She's listed California, Oregon and Washington as possible places where she'd like to relocate. Well, I'm allergic to the cold, so that leaves California.
Any input on possible locations in California where she can "Escape the redneck mentality" and I can still live around semi-sane individuals?
I wouldn't consider Wyoming, Montana or Idaho. I make no bones about being a city boy. I need a metro area with at least a million people (6 million where I live) to be happy.
Oh, my dear, coastal Orange County is awesome. Weather is 70 year round, the beaches are nice and you can still BBQ on some of them, and conservatives are just good middle class people along with some wealthy ones in Newport Beach. Life is more beautiful than LA but you don’t have to pay for parking anywhere. Yet you are close enough to LA to still attend events, etc.
Stay coastal and you’ve got lots of choices, though of course home prices are way more than TX. Coastal cities, not necessarily right on the coast. Seal beach, Huntington beach, costa Mesa, Laguna, San clemente, Aliso Viejo, etc.
There are other great places in CA that are conservative but not redneck too. Hope you get lots of choices in the thread. Gov’t sucks here but you can beat the weather and most people are pretty nice.
Well, so you deserve each other. :)
IMO you should counter-propose Denver.
It’s big enough for your threshold. Civilized enough for her.
Tries to act redneck enough for you, but nobody really takes it too serious.
Honestly. Denver.
Colorado will still be in operation, long after Cali has declared BK.
We're partners, period. Last move was to save my sanity, this move is to save hers. I have no problem with that.
2. The laws in CA are unbelievably bad and invasive. Remember to register your guns within 15 days of moving here or youll be up for some serious charges if they catch you. Also if you have any of those evil high cap magazines or assault rifles leave them at the CA border or sell them before you leave Texas.
That's going to hurt. I'm not a gun enthusiast, but I do have a CHL and a handgun which will be painful to give up.
3. Be aware that in Texas if she decides to divorce you youre only on the hook for 3 years (max) alimony but in CA its for life (not saying but once they loose respect for you things happen).
No problem at all. She's paid more in taxes than I've earned for years, and I'm close to the national median. Hell, I barely make what she puts in the 401K, FSA and what they take out for benefits. We put all of our eggs in her basket early on. She's a licensed professional, and I'm not. That says it all. If anything California's divorce laws heavily favor me.
Appreciate the heads up about the San Diego area. Seems to be a common theme in this thread between the unsolicited advice to abandon my wife of 21 years. I'll look more closely into the area. That information I truly do appreciate.
Born and raised in Colorado Springs. Just speaking for me, I’d like a warmer climate.
Thanks Yaelle. Uplifting comments are truly and genuinely appreciated.
Hey, I’m admittedly ignorant about California, hence my request for information. I’m only as good as google at the moment, and when I searched I found lots of news entries about contested trails, trails being closed down, and heavy Sierra Club opposition. If that’s truly not the case, I have no way of knowing.
Fine. Try San Diego... But don’t say you weren’t warned about moving to that den of villany and scum known as California.
Arent you going to miss her?

Beat me to the same thought, and caused me to snort a slug of brew through the nose!! lol
I know the West coast states have beautiful terrain, but don’t know why anyone would want to move from Texas to go there, unless they are hopelessly liberal. Texas is not populated by rednecks.
Um, not Reseda.... Unless she likes home invasions and speaks a pretty fluent Spanish.
We don't really have any Rednecks here. With ten shot magazines, CCW’s as hard to come by as Sandra Fluke's hymen, no open carry, Illegal Aliens (but you can't call them that) driving around without Licenses or Insurance, Illegal Aliens Voting (nobody cares), ridiculous Income and Sales Taxes and the biggest bunch of Morons running the show in Sacramento, California is not conducive to the Redneck lifestyle.
That being said, South Orange County is paradise. If not here, the Central Coast is the place to be if more Rural living is the name of the game. We have Family up there.
The politics here seriously suck, but there are really good conservative pockets. I think you would like living in Huntington beach or environs. All kinds of housing. Certainly some Spanish tiled roofs.
If you just HAVE to move, check out Eastern Washington.
I have two web friends who are mom and daughter. Daughter lives West of Snoqualmie Pass near Seattle and mom lives to the East of the Pass several hours away. The worst weather is West of the Pass.
I haven’t seen you post where you live in Texas. I’m sure there are some rednecks, but not many areas with them and it would depend on your wife’s definition of ‘redneck’.
Hope you mean that, because you're about to.
I'm not smiling.
Why Barcelona?
I live in CA and consider myself a redneck,...

dragnet2, just what is your definition of a redneck?
I am a Natural Born Texan, going back to the early-to-mid-1800s, and have often seen your postings bashing Texans and our Governor.
I’ve lived here for almost 70 years and have never run into a ‘redneck’ like people from the left coast and up North like to call anyone from the Deep South.
I’m not trying to be antagonistic with you, but am serious about what you consider to be a ‘redneck’.
Be aware that in Texas if she decides to divorce you youre only on the hook for 3 years (max) alimony...

Nope. No alimony in Texas.
Barring very unusual circumstances, when a married couple divorces it is a 50-50 split of assets (or dollar values) acquired during their marriage.
For instance, if one party had gotten property of value prior to the marriage, it doesn’t get counted in the divorce settlement.
Live in Dallas. Ive suggested Austin, but who knows.

Wow! I’m dumbstruck. If she believes Dallas is a haven for rednecks, when it’s one of the four MOST liberal cities in Texas (along with Austin, Houston and San Antonio), I don’t know how you’re going to find her a place anywhere that she wouldn’t consider to be filled with rednecks.
I was bred, born and raised in Dallas, but moved to Mid-Cities when 27 to be closer to work. I live only about 4 miles from the DFW airport and there are no rednecks anywhere nearby, AFAIK.
I’ve been saddened for many years that Dallas became a liberal city and might only drive there a couple of times a year, although it’s only about 25 miles away. Dallas has become a larger version of Austin.
Your wife must have a VERY far left view of what constitutes a redneck since Dallas is increasingly inhabited by blacks and hispanics who always vote for the far left.
Not dissing you, Melas, I’m just having problems figuring out what your wife considers to be rednecks.
no reason, I just threw that in. anywhere but California
