It may come as a surprise to some (and boy, do I feel like a cantankerous old geezer for saying this,) but firearms are a mature technology. We all have to be aware that just because you can do something, doesnt mean you should
Following the invention of the double column magazine by Deudonne Saive, there really havent been a whole lot of original ideas coming out of the handgun industry for the last 75 years. Yes, I know, underqualified hacks like me will tell you all about the latest whizbang doodad from SHOT show, but in comparison to say, the medical field, its really just the refinement of existing technologies and the application of new materials from other industries, combined in many instances with hyperbolic marketing.
Which brings me to the AF2011-A1 double barrel pistol from Arsenal Firearms. If you listen carefully to the video, you can almost hear the dialog in the meeting that lead to its creation. Hey Franz, weve got a couple of spare 1911′s and a MIG welder. Any clue what we can do with them? Either that, or they hired a recently-graduated business consultant who mistook the South Park underpants gnomes episode as an instruction manual.
According to Aresenals site, the AF2011-A1 is the very first industrial double barrel semiautomatic pistol of all times. But wait theres more. Theyre claiming that they are making this true industrial market-ready double barrel .45 caliber pistol to commemorate the Colt 1911-A1 in the Centenary.
It is offered either with two independent triggers and one sear group or with two triggers permanently joined and the choice of one or two sear groups. You can pick up one of these wunderkinds in mirror finish Deep Blue or with a 3400 Vickers surface hardness White Ash Nitrite coating.
Now, if youll excuse me, I have a brilliant idea that involves a couple of Glock 17s and a tube of JB Weld
I'm going to get flamed for that.
When is a 1911A not a 1911A?
Do the same thing with vice grips.
I’m thinkin’ this isn’t an inside the waistband type gun, huh?
The one John Browning entered in the U.S. Pistol Trials went 6000 rounds without a malfunction of any kind. That included torture testing.
BTW, I agree with the author that a double barreled 1911 is more of a curiosity than a really useful design. Also Deudonne Saive did not invent the double stack magazine as the Savage model 1907 in .32 auto had one.
Of course Saive was a great gun designer, notably for the FN FAL. He worked with John Browning until Browning died.
What does that bad boy weigh fully loaded ?
And i don’t think I’d be twice as scared staring down two barrels of a .45.....
Here, hold m’ beer an’ watch this!
Looks like someone forgot the basic axiom of pistoleros who carry the 1911: 45 ACP. Because shooting twice is just silly.
as my grandfather used to say.. just because you can, doesn’t mean you should..
They should do this with the AR-15.
Yes, I’ve heard Browning’s original design was extremely reliable. Wouldn’t surprise me, since he was an absolute genius. Then modern gun manufacturers decided to “improve” it.
I also wonder how much the predominant shooting style of his era had to do with it: Fire pistol one handed with arm outstretched and locked at the elbow. Makes it nearly impossible to limp-wrist a gun, leading to fewer jams. The modified Weaver stance most of us use today is certainly more accurate, but also more prone to limp-wristing. I had an old NRA instructor tell me he thinks limp-wristing is the primary cause of the 1911’s reputation for jamming.
Personally, I keep an 8-shot S&W 627 in a holster next to my bed, loaded with .357’s, and a couple extra moon clips in my drawer. It doesn’t jam.
To me it’s kind of like need ice skates with two blades on each skate. Time to man-up and stay single barrel folks ...
that is awesome...
Since the hammers are welded together, you get two shots with one pull of the trigger, classifying this pistol as a machine gun by ATF.
This means it won't be available for sale to civilians in the US. No new machine guns can be added to the registry since 1986.
Get a Kimber...
Kinda makes me bummed I won’t be around in 2111 to see the three barreled model.
LOL!!! Coming Soon to an Action Movie near you. One in each hand as the hero blasts away with his 200 rounds of .45 each bullet lifting the bad guy off the ground.
