Launching Of The USS Gurnard

While rummaging through my dad's attic, I came across this old tape of the launching of the Gurnard. I had to go to the Goodwill store and pick up an old VCR so I could transfer the tape to digital format. My pa was the Chief Naval Architect on Mare Island and I had the good fortune to witness several launchings.

Very interesting and neat. They certainly had those launchings down. Do they still use wood?

Thanks for sharing, WSGilcrest

This is how they launch now. Unceremonious launching of the USS Texas using a submersible barge.

I remember pa explaining to me that if they got the speed wrong, the aft end of the boat would become buoyant before the fore end was off the ways and the boat could break in half.

Nobody is gonna understand the dance of the flaming assholes LOL

I recall a drink called a nuclear waste.
They’d bust a cyalume light and strain it through cheese cloth, mix it up with rum or some thing like otto fuel and serve it up LoL
