Bad move, IMO. Whoever they draft is going to need a senior leader to help him with the transition from college ball to the big leagues. Besides ... the team needs more than just a new QB ... that entire team sucked last season.
They have to let him go or they cannot afford to get more than just a new QB. $28 million is freed up.
Way too risky to commit $28 millon for someone who may not play again; especially when the Colts have no chance to go deep in the playoffs with or without a healthy Peyton Manning.
With his salary representing about 1/5 of the salary cap there’s no room to keep him around to train a first round rookie, that would tie up over 1/4 of their cap for 2 guys that can’t be on the field at the same time. You can’t fix the rest of the team that way.
