Nowadays, mostly a scam. And a high cost one at that.
Rick was right. This guy says more things that are right and true and that everyone is thinking, but that are highly politically incorrect. His honesty and forthrightness and cutting through all the BS is very refreshing. We will get NONE OF THIS HONESTY and FRANKNESS with Willard as nominee. Zilch.
There are also a lot of ways to blow a lot in tuition and not learn anything that will get you a job. How many English majors do we really need in this economy?
I use the things I learned in my engineering and math courses at my present job, even though it isn't an engineering and math job. As soon as there is a technical issue at work, I am the first person they call for help.
It's the final step in indoctrinating the future Socialists of America.
I’m a Newt backer but I will vote for RS if he is the nominee. Some of the things he says here are right.
Big College could be looked at as another “Ponzi” scheme...
somewhere along the line, the rules changed from:
go to college, get a useful degree, make the world and your personal situation better, pass on to your kids if you can .
Now it’s: go to college, get indoctrinated or party or endure the radical line, graduate and find a job in ANYTHING in or out of your major and end up funding an institution where radicals like Ayers and Dornen can become gormands and wine experts...
like everything else these days, the value and purpose has been skewed and diminished...thanks to libs and anarchists.
High school is over-rated
Grade School is over-rated
Pre-School is over-rated
The whole damn education system is over-rated
I have a college degree and I’m not a snob and I wasn’t indoctrinated... I’m as conservative as you can get. That was the route I chose... to each his own.
I wouldn’t have gotten the fabulous job I have now if I didn’t have my degree. I work for a conservative, family-friendly company for conservative people. It’s my dream job.
It all depends on WHERE you go to college. I went to a state school here in Texas that I didn’t go deep into debt for. On my first day my history professor told us to return our history books because he wasn’t going to use it. He taught us REAL history. My geology professor had styrofoam rocks he’d throw at the sleeping morons in the back of the class. I had a wonderful, unforgettable experience that I would do all over again. No regrets.
So Santorum (a lawyer) whose mother was a college graduate and made sure her kids had higher education, thinks Obama is the snob? Obama is a snob, but Rick’s nose can sometimes be stuck up too.
If you can't meet these prerequisites, then college is a waste of time and money.
There are plenty of jobs that don't require college. Some of them are dead-end jobs. But, there are many that aren't. The last requirement listed above also applies if you want to advance in any career.
I'll also note that "someone else willing to pay for it" isn't necessarily your parents, or a scholarship. If you have the aptitude and desire, it's not difficult to find an employer that is willing to pay your college tuition. But, you first have to demonstrate to them that you are worth the investment.
However, college is NOT an entitlement. That kind of attitude is what has created another "bubble" in higher education. Just like the relaxation of mortgage underwriting standards led to a bubble in house prices, the widespread availability of guaranteed student loans have created a bubble in university tuition.
As usual, government meddling in the market has had unintended consequences that are worse than the original "problem".
