What gave the right for the officer to enter the property without the owner’s permission?

She wasn’t a suspect and she had broken no law.

It’s almost as though cops are looking for dogs to shoot.

Shortly after my husband died (on the farm) I had ADT put in an alarm system...It took them 3 days, as the house was an old post and beam construction and almost 100 years old. One night the alarm went off and ADT called the sheriff's office. I couldn't find the back up battery system and the key pad only stopped the alarm temp. as the battery back up system had to also be disarmed...

Anyway a few minutes later I saw a deputy walking up my drive way....My dog was barking and I had my revolver at my side and went to the door. Opened it a crack (3 season porch) and the deputy stopped about 20 feet from the porch. The first question I asked him was, are you from the sheriff's office, (seems dumb doesn't it) when he said yes, I asked him where his car was, cause there was no cop car in sight....He said on alarms they don't drive into the drive way of the home and his partner was around back checking windows and doors. I told him to wait, (he never approached my house from the time I opened the door a crack to talk with him) until I put my dog in the back room, I laid my gun in plain site and then let him in the house. His partner showed up a few minutes later and said he found no sign of entry (this was at 2am) We sat and they took a report and left...

Sheriff deputy's in rural area's aren't stupid. They know most farms have dogs for protection and don't use them for target practice.

My alarm was still cycling every minute and when it went off it cut off the phone and I was trying to find out how to stop the battery from cycling. It was a pretty big system and had an alarm (large horn) in the attic. Rural areas alarms are quite loud. The following day several neighbors came out to check and like one gal said, she didn't know if she should have come over or not.....I told her she was smart to stay away when you don't know whats going on. Her house was about 1/4 mile down the road.....

I don't know why all of a sudden lately cops are shooting dogs...this deputy was smart enough to not approach the house from the time I went to the door and farm dogs are quite territorial....I give the sheriff's department and those 2 deputy's a 5 star response.

The never questioned me about my handgun, in plain site and I am glad. It wasn't registered and I had inherited it from my father when he passed on. It was the one he had registered for his CC weapon. (retired cop)

That was quite a while and 2 house's ago, but I was smart enough to put my dog in the utility room. She use to be an outside dog on a chain by the back door. I cannot imagine some cop so scared and stupid they would trespass without permission and then shoot a dog doing his job of protecting his territory..
