In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
ad rem \ad REM\ , adverb
1. Without digressing; in a straightforward manner.
adjective
1. Relevant; pertinent.
Example sentences:
I am sure these things are not ad rem. Some persons think, my lord, it is very hard these men should be forced against their consciences from the church.
-- Richard Baxter, The Practical Works of Richard Baxter
The letter seems free of formulae, which suggests it was composed specifically ad rem.
-- Roger Rees, Layers of Loyalty in Latin Panegyric
Etymology:
Ad rem is a useful Latin phrase that literally means "at thing" from the roots ad and rēs.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

WFB's attempt to emulate us ; ) No pushing at the door please!
I was imagining what the reaction would be from our (totally unbiased and Pro-Western, pro-Christian) news media at the CNN “reprobate” last night if both Gingrich and Santorum had showed up with ashes on their forehead .....
Could they have claimed they were from putting out the fires in Afghanistan set ablaze by 7th century Muslim fanatics?
so they didn’t? i didn’t watch the debate but wondered if they would. i guess it would have been a bit too edgy to do that. imagine asking a Hindu with a dot on the forehead or a muslim garbed up in their tradition, “hey, what’s ‘at on yer head??”
Good observation! Perhaps they both ran into the same problem I did — so many people at church that I could not get in. (WI) My daughter reported the same problem in VA. Cardinal dolan in NYC was pictured yesterday morning distributing ashes in a soup line in NYC at 5 AM. He commented (joyfully) that the best part about Ash Wednesday is that no one asks if you are Catholic.
That is a fascinating question, Robert
Well, I’m a convert so I know where those remarks are coming from. I did the same thing when I was a senior in HS — asked a girl in my physiolgy class if she knew that she had something black on hef forehead. I had never seen ashes on heads before. I guess it took me to my senior year in HS to see this because the kids now had cars and drove themselves to school. This girl (who was always immaculately groomed) explained, and I was SO embarrassed that I had asked (although I don’t think she was upset).
I later studied Catholicism when I was in college and engaged to a Catholic. But, I don’t take offense to such remarks.
I was surprised to learn that other religions use ashes too. I just learned that this year. This area is heavily Lutheran, and they keep the same custom. And I hear that some Baptists distribute ashes too. That rumor is unconfirmed, as of now. LOL.
Probably no pierogies on sale at the LV supermarkets, either. ;-)
Latin’s cool. Like bowties.
Very interesting. And those very same Mormons have no clue as to what being a Christian is.
Ad Rem
If rem is added to embers we get remembers since many a memory was jogged by hot coals or burning coke. Or was that ad rem and coke?
Lots of Protestants wear ashes too. One of my friends at the park said, oh you have a smudge of something on your forehead and tried to wipe it away for me and I said no it’s ashes. She was so embarrassed and her daughter said Mom! Which goes to prove parents can embarrass their children at any age.
You rock, SG
I think it’s also when you dream about commercials. A for you.
A guy on my squad was in church with me and got ashes, but that night at a training he had washed them off.....I nailed him on it and someone told him he would rot in hell. We all got a big laugh. His mother is now dead, but she was a nun....he shoulda known better. Had some silly excuse that he always showers at night. We told him he could have showered after training. We had fun with that one.
Aw, thanks HD!
Salutatio!
Semper ubi sub ubi.
I’m surprised there are no Michael Stipe-related comments yet.
I need to look up how to translate “except of course for Commando Friday”
Those are clled nightmares.
i absolutely loved that Franklin Graham pointed out that Obama has been more concerned with protecting Muslims than he has been with protecting Christians being murdered by Muslims overseas. my SIL in Ohio reports that her Sunday school teacher told them “we have a muslim, a Mormon and a Catholic who shares our moral values, i know who i am voting for, do you?”
