ARLINGTON, Texas - A two-time “Teacher of the Year” in Arlington is now fighting to keep her job after allegedly telling a Hispanic student to “Go back to Mexico.” Barnett Junior High School math teacher Shirley Bunn has 24 years of teaching experience. But her career could end with what she called a moment of frustration. Bunn admitted she lost her temper on Sept. 30 while distributing Title 1 forms to her eighth grade students.

According to public documents, a student who had a history of being disruptive repeatedly asked his teacher for a form printed in Spanish by saying, “I’m Mexican. I’m Mexican.”

The documents said Bunn tried to tell him that he could get the forms in the office but he continued to argue with her and repeat, “I’m Mexican.”

In response, Bunn blurted out “[Then] go back to Mexico.”

Here is the full video report:

If you wish to contact the school district board to demand Ms. Bunn's reinstatement, use the following contacts. Be respectful, but be heard:

He is supposed to be learning from his teacher.

Perhaps the lesson she did teach is actual more relevant and important than the one she "should have" taught.

That claiming something for a temporary advantage comes with the consequence of all the other attributes of that thing. That you and your self-esteem really aren’t that important. That there’s always someone more clever than you are. That hurtful behavior is risky, because you may incur more hurt than you dish out.

Oh, yeah. And that maybe he should go back to Mexico...

No, the only lesson she taught was that a temper can get even a teacher suspended. You can bet this kid is laughing his ass off as her career circles the drain. If the local news and radio is truthful at all, she’s done and won’t be coming back from this suspension.
