Weekly FR Boating Thread ~ Vol. 4 ~ Feb. 17, 2012 ~ Spring Projects

Launching ~ Weekly FR Boating Thread ~ Vol. 1 ~ Jan. 27, 2012

Weekly FR Boating Thread ~ Vol. 2 ~ Feb 3, 2012 ~ “Off Season”

Weekly FR Boating Thread ~ Vol. 3 ~ Feb. 10, 2012 ~ Boat Transportation

Last week’s thread had 23 posts, including boat transportation sources and recommendations.

With Spring in the air and the boating season around the corner, what is everyone doing to prepare?

This week I have been busy helping clients either prep their boats to sell or get their boats ready to use.

Lots of cleaning, trouble shooting, replacing old halyards, recommending boatyards, surveyors and various service sources.

Back in the old days, when all the boats were made of wood, boats were referred to as being ‘bright’, when all the paint and varnish was fair, fresh, shiny and new. (Can you smell it?)

In modern times, when you boat is in top condition, everything works, and your vessel is ready to head out on an adventure at a moment’s notice – I refer to this as being ‘Brilliant!’.

Keep on scrubbing!

What kind of engines do you run? I'm an ag mechanic. Just
finished an overhaul on a John Deere 4640 (466” turbo) today.

One has a 300 hp John Deere.(32' Levy)

Another 38' Young Bros has a new 440 Yanmar electronic. We snapped a crankshaft in two under way last season and had to replace the engine. It was toast.

Another 32' H&H is having a rebuilt 420 Yanmar installed next month as the old Yanmar had the 3rd cylinder malfunction the end of last season. It looked like the top of the cylinder started to melt and it distorted the block.-Tom

Sounds like a blast! Pontoons are really popular here. Great for fishing, beaching and pulling kids on a tube.

Top speed for me is about 38 to 40 depending on how much weight on board. But, cruising is really what the boat was for. Best thing I liked was pulling into a cove and rafting out with other freinds for the night under the stars...Fully self contained in AZ during the hot summer and cool winter seasons makes pretty much year around boating. An Expensive habit!

Wife's cousins live here when they're not farming in Iowa.
They owned a 29 foot Fountain with twin 502s.
It would do 100 mph on the water. The sound was...awesome.

The ultimate in boating, Reggie Fountain,..There was a doc that had his 47’ lightning slipped in the marina named “Trailer Trash”...that boat was a real head turner for sure. Amazing how he rarely came up to use it.o

A fill on our boat will probably be in the $4,000 range this summer...she holds about 800 gallons....

You can never go wrong with Johnson/Evinrude. Parts availability world wide even for motors over fifty years old. No other manufacturer comes close to parts availability.

Yep...If you use it a lot it’s gonna be a small fortune and then some. In some areas of the country keeping tanks full to prevent condensation is important. In AZ, we usually don’t have to worry about it. I’ve never had the problem of condensation build up in the gas tanks here..Smaller bodies of water and year around boating keeps the gas tank clean.
